Portfolio Manager or Stock Analyst Jobs

Hey everyone.

Is a Portfolio Manager or Stock Analyst a good career?

Is anyone here in these careers?

Is it considered to be in the field of Finance?

What additional degrees or certifications are required?

From the research I’ve been doing it looks like these careers cap out at around
$150 - $220 annually?

Thanks.

You can't just walk in an be a PM. It's not about your number of degrees or certificates, it's about your experience.

And stock analysts are rarely called that. There are sell side equity researchers and buy side equity researchers.

Comp absolutely does not max out at 220 lol, the highest earning portfolio managers in the world earn in excess of $1billion a year. That's obviously unrealistic for a layman but it's not abnormal to see PMs pulling mid six figures at decent shops.

So for experience, where is a good starting point? What’s a good first job to put you in the right direction?

Yea I saw that Hedge Fund PMs make a lot but I assumed it was not usually reachable. I was thinking more of a PM for individuals at a WM firm.

Also, thanks for the clarification on the stock researcher jobs. I’m new to this and still learning.

What you're referring to aren't called PMs, they're called wealth managers and they don't tend to do stock selection but more fund allocation among a bunch of other things like financial planning. Wealth management is a whole different arena to asset management so if that's what you meant, go find WM/PWM people. But again the comp definitely doesn't max out at 220. Largely depends on your book but can be a lot higher than that.

A good place to start to becoming an equity PM is investment banking or equity research on the sell side. From there you go to the buyside. Some people get into the buyside out of undergrad but it's pretty rare.
