Over the week, I heard a story of a father bestowing his life’s collection of ties to his son who was about to graduate college and begin at the bottom of the corporate ladder. For me, hearing such a story touched one of my rare soft spots.
Just stop for a second and think about accruing a collection for over 30 years, and the story that this collection would tell. If well kept, the classics, or older ties might show the harder, more frugal times in the father’s professional career; while the newer Ferragamo’s could display hard earned, hierarchal success.
I believe that a tie says a lot about moral character. Personally, if jobs were dolled out according to the quality of your tie and knot, there is no doubt in my mind that I would be working for Kyle Bass. Unfortunately, the tie selection criterion is only partially true.
In the words of a GSElevator Tweet, “Handshakes and tie knots. I don’t have time for someone that can’t master those basic skills.” But if you seriously cannot coordinate a worthy tie and knot, can you really be trusted to do even the most rudimentary of tasks?
Unlike how a mother hopes to pass diamonds to their daughters, a son inheriting his father’s collection has a wholly greater meaning for me. What do you say; do you take care of your current ties for a (future) son? Can ties be as lasting as fatherly advice?

yeah agreed, watch or a nice pen is much simpler but still has that sentimental value. i could easily see the son dragging the pile of smelly old ties to the nearest vintage store for a quick buck
my marketing prof / adviser once said "all a tie says is that you work for someone else" - haven't bought a tie since. more of a cufflink guy when it comes to accessories. But sure if I had a tie collection i'd pass them onto my son, but hope that instead of him wearing them himself he gave them out to his future employees

I wore my dad's to my first interview....aced it.
I give my clothes (what's left of them) to charity when I'm done with them, so no heirlooms in that department.
A lot of my nicest work clothes are my father's. I have a handful of suits, a few ties, and a pair of shoes.
That said, I think that watches or cufflinks are the logical comparison to diamonds. They age better than most clothes.
My kid would look like a complete dickhouse in my ties, just like I would in my dad's ties.
My dad left me a couple sacks of Kennedy silver half dollars. That's the kind of shit you leave your son.

There are a bunch of iphone apps about ties which are good.
Although the chicks are "assez bonnes", the tie knot they are doing is quite simple and too thin for certain ties and types of collar shirts. Practice a bit at home and go for a half-windsor knot, that's much nicer and thicker. (i personally think the full windsor knot is a bit too big but thats just my personal opinion...

Funny you should mention Kyle Bass. I find some of his investment theses interesting, but I always questioned his choice of tie. A bit flashy/bold, but not in an interesting way.
