I was five or six and my dad always said "we don't lie in this family."  So we are driving home Christmas Eve from my uncle's and I say to him "Dad you know how you say we don't lie to each other? Well is Santa real?"  To which he flat out with no hesitation responded no which cased my mom to almost have a heart attack.  Christmas sucked the next day.

For me, it was actually the reverse. My family always told us about gifting and giving the right gift and so on. Only later I started to identify with St. Nicholas and this cheeky joy of anonymous gifting, so this is now a ritual to put sweets in front of neighbour's doors before the 6th of December. It is a really fascinating thing, to essentially imitate the saint and become an "avatar" of small gifts. So I basically "constructed Santa Claus", by imitating him actively in the first place.

...and the Truth shall set you free

I remember trying to convince my 2nd grade teacher that Santa was fake and she didn’t want to hear me on the topic.

Ive always known Santa is “fake” because my parents would show me animated videos with the real Santa (St. Nicholas) and the good he did so I was well aware that he was real but dead and the interpretation of him put forth by the mainstream media was fake.

We have a 6 year old and she is very curious, like asking very detailed questions about space, oceans, various natural disasters, the atmosphere, nature, etc., and most recently learned about the North and South poles from a DK book and the Planet Earth documentary. This most recent dive into discovering and exploring the poles led to a lot of questioning about Santa.

I feel super conflicted because I also feel like Kendall's dad and do not want to construct so many lies. As you raise kids you realize a lot of things society demands you tell them are lies... I don't know why we need the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy and Santa, etc., or Socialism, Supply-Side Economics or the Laffer Curve. Even if I wanted to keep this lie going, my daughter's skepticism is going to win the day sooner rather than later, and some kids in first grade are already Santa Truthers.

If she presses me I may something like "Santa is real, in a way, and what happens on Christmas is pretty magical." I hope that she understands that it's fun to pretend something magical is real even if you know something isn't real, such as reading fantasy books or watching movies like Totoro.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

Flippin' conspiracy theorists man, next thing you'll tell me that the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy aren't real either huh? 🙄 Touch grass.

A while ago my moved from LA to AZ. During this time Santa would still leave presents with my parents, but never with me. I thought it was because I didn't own the tree and I never filled out a change of address form, so I made sure to do both properly and still no presents under my tree. I went to the post office and told them i didn't think Santa received my change of address, so I wanted to send Santa an angry letter that I did not receive my presents. I wanted to make sure that he received my letter, so I asked to send it certified to the  North Pole. The staff refused so I had to get the manager involved and he said I'd need a zip code or delivery, otherwise I'd need to send it snail mail. I told them anything going through the post office is snail mail. They walked me through the expedited services then asked me to leave or they'd call the cops, so I left. I found the address for a research settlement in the North Pole, so I'm going to address it there and hope it gets forwarded to Santa. I'll be going in to the post office again this Saturday and sending it priority mail.

Started believing again recently. There are waaay less believable things out there. Like climate change and Covid 19

Never discuss with idiots, first they drag you at their level, then they beat you with experience.

True Story:

I was 5 and didn’t buy into the whole Santa thing (granted we never got presents or went big on Christmas anyway as we were poor growing up). I found a blue card stock business card around the house, and wrote for Santa to gift me a toy train. Left it in the chimney. No you came on Christmas, and the card was still in the chimney come Christmas Day. Shrugged me shoulders and went on about life lol
