The Godfather Part II (the others are great too, but the second one was my favorite), Lord of The Rings: Return of the King, Spider-Man 2, and Parasite (which will be remembered as a classic in the decades to come)

watching the classic Disney movies (lion king, Aladdin, etc frozen, tangled) helps when I’m in a depressive funk

Not sure what you define as classics. Usual Suspects, Starwars Ep 4-6, Field of Dreams, Godfather 1&2, Three Colors: Red, The Princess Bride, Shawshank Redemption, Rocky I & 4, Gone With the Wind, Four Feathers, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Some Like it Hot, The Good The Bad and The Ugly, Enter the Dragon, Police Story 2, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Matrix

EDIT: Army of Darkness ("lady, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave the store")

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

I'm not sure we can classify 42 as a 'Classic' since it's from 2013, but if you like it, also consider 61*

It's tough to go wrong with the IMDB 'Top 250' as a starting point. One thing to remember about it though is that the reviewers of newer movies are likely more casual and less critical than the people who seek out older movies. A simple rule of thumb is that if you could watch it in the theater then go and write the review, it's probably overrated compared to something you had to seek out and watch at home.

I'm going to go out in left field here and recommend 'Das Boot' (1981) as a sleeper pick. Try to get it in the original German with subtitles if you can, and it needs to be played in the dark and LOUD. (it uses sound to great effect) I'd even classify it more as a psychological thriller than a war movie. 5% of the time the U-Boat is a terrifying killer, and the rest of the time it's the weakest ship at sea, only surviving through stealth. You've never seen a simple"ping" used to such great effect. A number of the reviews are from actual sub crewmen who say "we watch other 'serious' sub movies for laughs, but we feel like this is what our life would've been like 50+ years ago."

Final selling point: If you watch "Beerfest" you might recognize one of the stars.

I like most of the other suggestions as well, by the way with the exception of Gone With the Wind. It drags on for ages and just isn't any fun.

This is blasphemous. Gone With the Wind is the greatest movie of all time.

I'm a "cinéphile", Kubrick is the greatest ever but Lynch is currently the best with Paul Thomas Anderson. I'm always disappointed that most people don't know good movies or are more on recent movies that have not often the same impact than the other ones.

Mulholland drive Inherent Vice Barry Lyndon Apocalypse Now The contempt of Godard Elephant of Lars von Trier The big Lebowski Twin peaks (TV show but greatest thing ever done) The return of the king Vertigo 2001 a space odyssey In the mood for love Casino The Godfather part II

There are so many...

Absolutely never felt order than now with these "classic movies" from the 90s-00s.

Some of the below are classics, some are recent, and a couple are sleepers and cult hits.

Breaking Away Deer Hunter Dirty Dozen The Great Escape Kung Fu Hustle Rounders Boondock Saints Snatch The Grand Budapest Hotel The Magnificent Seven (original) The 7 Samurai (original of the Magnificent Seven)

Grand Budapest Hotel is great. that whole year (2014) produced so many great movies: whiplash, the imitation game, selma

So many greats already listed above. My less conventional pick is The Fugitive. I feel like it’s really hard to make a good action movie, most of them are too basic and it gets old. So bonus points for pulling that off.

If you're looking to find some to watch, I recommend taking a look at the old lists of movies nominated for academy awards. Generally some decent options. Some of my favorites: * The Godfather I and II (watched III because I was pot committed but it's not that great) * Gladiator * No Country for Old Men (it's newer but good) * Silence of the Lambs * Pulp Fiction * Jerry Maguire * Goodfellas * Crash

wikipedia page of academy award nominees/winners is my ultimate go-to --- cannot recommend enough for anyone looking for something good

why did I have to scroll to the bottom of a "classic movie" thread to see FMJ...

Missing a ton but everyone needs to watch:

Casablanca On the Waterfront Citizen Kane Psycho Deer Hunter

International for those interested:

Bicycle Thieves (Italian) The Cranes Are Flying (russian) The Rules of the Game (french) 400 Blows (french)

I believe it's 10 or 11 years old now so I'm putting it on here - There Will Be Blood. Also Boogie Nights. Good Will Hunting. Godfather part 2. Fight Club. The Searchers. Definitely all 3 LOTR. And of course, The Grateful Dead Movie.
