Jonathan Kaye did nothing wrong
First, that was a beautiful punch, absolutely flawless, 10/10.
Second, that troon racially abused him and thus deserved it. Fuck around and find out. He found out.

If you've ever met him, you'd know he's also a great guy.
I find this all to be a little silly. People say that he was racially abused for being Jewish... How would the assilants even know that he was Jewish, I've not seen anyone comment on that?
And hello racist, transphobic college student LARPing as an industry senior. How about you go fuck yourself?
Kid, this isn't your far left college campus safe space where calling someone "racist" and "transphobic" (lol, just lol at how lame of a person you must be IRL) automatically makes you win an argument.
Grow up, you sound pathetic.
Pathetic.
Kaye's claim is that he said to the protestors they're on the wrong side. I'm sure that was enough for them to treat him with the vile hatred they would direct at a Jewish person, even if they're not sure he's Jewish.
grow a pair buddy
You sounds miserable to be around.
It definitely seems like a situation where he was being attacked, but still not sure if he did "nothing wrong", violence is never the right thing to do really no matter the situation. Albeit in this situation, Maye was justified but still not completely right in what he did.
I want to believe he was attacked but it doesn't make sense that he was assaulted "for being Jewish" as there was no way of telling he was a Jew in the video?!
I mean we just don't know what caused the incident for sure, he could've said something to the protestors for all we know, but from watching the video and seeing the obscene amounts of liquid on his jacket, it's pretty clear he was egged on. Still, not sure violence was the answer, if you really think you're right, make them look worse and walk away
Fuckin mahatma gandhi over here
Lmao it makes you look better if you don't lash out, makes the people attacking you look weak never stoop down to that level
I think it makes sense to give a lot of leeway to a person who was just minding their own business before someone else started it. Doesn't seem fair to me to judge someone's snap decision reaction in a situation that they didn't create. Of course there are extremes, you can't just knock someone out for looking at you funny. But the leeway needs to be high.
In a case like this one, it really doesn't take much for a person to feel rightfully threatened. Being surrounded by a few people behaving aggressively toward you is plenty of justification to treat it as a threat and respond accordingly.
Sure those are fair points, I just don't think it's fair to say he did absolutely nothing wrong is all
This whole "violence is never the answer" spiel is fucking bullshit. Plenty of issues are solved with violence every single day. The question is, was violence necessary here. The answer is, we don't know. Based on all of the presented evidence it seems like violence was an acceptable response. At the end of the day, it really comes down to who was the bigger hypocrite. If you are out protesting "bigotry" and then immediately turn into a massive bigot when someone disagrees with you. Well I can't say I feel bad for you.
This entire thing is stupid for hundreds of reasons, but most obviously because it shows how easily swayed supposedly "intelligent" people really are.
You’re right, he executed the one punch knockout effectively and without hesitation. The reach, the connection to the rainbow member’s chin, the follow through and grabbing the pole to prevent himself from falling down. That being said, Give him Jon Jones!
tbh hes a bit of a clown in real life.. plenty of times juniors have discussed clocking him
That’s crazy, can’t believe juniors discuss punching a senior banker multiple times any any place
This is sarcasm right? I can't imagine working in finance and not talking about clocking my boss. That'd be how you know you found the spot
Here's the reality- f around and find out for the protestor was getting KO'd. f around and find out for an MD is losing millions of dollars potentially via career suicide. not taking sides here but there's a reason people say to not engage with people who have a lot less to lose.
Im sure hes okay with his net worth as of now.
on a needs, basis, sure. but if he was done with making money, he would've retired already
The most objective take on this I've seen
I don't know man. The "drag queen beater" is one hell of a nickname to put on a M&A pitch and I'm pretty sure many business owners from the South and red states in general would like working with this guy.
He would be fine in Dubai
Are incidents like this one (strangers pouring liquids on a pedestrian) "normal" in NYC?
I feel sorry for anyone that has kids. They were just walking home for dinner & it's awful to see people like this bullying families.
During the looting riots in 2020, it wasn't that far fetched to see this in NYC.
Getting accosted for going out in public in NYC has become a fairly normal occurrence since 2020. Whether by a mentally ill homeless vagrant, violent illegal alien, or dumb liberal rioter/protestor is all down to luck of the draw. All of my friends who lived there have moved out, the one still stuck working there (commuter) is seriously considering a taking a job in consulting in Kentucky to get away. I know older senior professionals who grew up there during the violence of the 70s and 80s who say it's more dangerous now, because at least back then it was very obvious who/where to avoid going near to not get assaulted. Now it's just everywhere, could happen as easily in line at a bodega as on the subway.
Edit: as if on cue, and this wasn't even a bad neighborhood by normal standards - NYPost
Yes he did! She didn't tap and there was no bell!
The guy should be fired on general principles, if the reporting is correct.
Apparently he told a bunch of pro-Palestinian protestors "you're on the wrong side" or something, and then the altercation began. First off, how fucking stupid is he, to say that? He's an MD at a bank - he should have the basic fucking common sense to understand that there is no scenario in which that turns out well for him. If I were running Moelis, he'd be fired tomorrow on general principles because of the complete lack of judgement displayed there. Second, when these idiot protestors inevitably respond, call the damn police. What the hell did he think was going to happen when he punched someone? Does he think he's the sympathetic party there?
How anyone this stupid gets to a leadership position in the first place is astonishing. You think he's showing up in Saudi Aramco's boardroom and telling MBS that backing the Palestinians is stupid? Then why the fuck is he doing it at a protest on the street in NYC?
“First off, how fucking stupid is he, to say that?”
?
We can stop pretending like this was some heinous thing to say lol - he’s allowed to verbally interact with people without getting attacked.
He's verbally harassing people on the street. Can we stop pretending like he asked someone the time of day?
He made a stupid decision. They escalated it. He escalated it further. There isn't a good person in this story. Just a bunch of very stupid people. The difference is, he's a fucking MD at an investment bank and should know better. Also, punching someone in the face is a much more violent act than dumping liquid on someone.
When people are throwing anti-Semitic slurs reminiscent of Berlin circa 1939 and then hurl things in your face, it is completely understandable that someone would respond that way. Especially when those same people deny the worst massacre of Jews since World War Two, and openly express admiration for a terrorist group that perpetrated the crime. Source: a Jew (me), who has family in Israel, and direct ancestors affected by the Holocaust (whose stories I have been raised with). I have experienced anti-semitism to varying degrees throughout my life, and I can tell you honestly, this past year has been something else. I, and a lot of other people, are hurting and afraid.
There are a few issues here: why did a 52 year investment banker think it was a good idea to provoke these people. It shows very poor judgement on his part. If people physically assaulted him, he has the right to defend himself. If someone was saying anti semitic crap and throwing drinks at him, the smarter thing to do would have been to walk away instead of escalating the situation
According to who? I haven't heard that story. I've heard that he told a bunch of people he thought were pro-Palestinian that they were backing the wrong side or some such. Then they hurled some drink at him. Then he slugged someone in the face. All I see is an escalating series of confrontations that began with him.
Sure. So are a lot of Palestinians. Acting like one group is right and one group is wrong (geopolitically) is absurd. Israel represents itself as a Jewish state, as well as a state for Jews. They're actively pushing people off their land to make way for a bunch of ultra-Orthodox settlers in an explicitly religiously-motivated series of land seizure and settlement. Are you surprised that the world is reacting is if it is Jews doing this? That is precisely what Mr Netanyahu wants.
Hamas are terrorists. But they only exist/have any support because the Israeli government treats Palestinians with the contempt and violence it does. Mr Netanyahu is pretty obvious about the fact that he's deliberately undermining a potential two state solution so that he can push for annexation of at least the West Bank.
I'm also a Jew. I'm also not happy with the anti-Semitic undertones of a lot of these protests (or overtones, often). But you are feeding the problem if you pretend like there isn't justification for that anger, or refuse to acknowledge that what the right wing Netanyahu government is doing in Gaza right now is fucking evil. Mr Kaye has no damn business yelling at protestors, and someone in his position should have better judgement. Yeah, that person fucked around and found out... but Mr Kaye apparently instigated that situation instead of walking on by, and that's important context.
I, for one, applaud him for standing on his principles and not backing down from these moronic queers for Palestine (chickens for kfc). More people need to call these idiots idiots. They fucked around, and found out. Much like their idols Hamas. And Saudis do not give a flying fuck either FYI. They are bending over backwards to try to normalize relations with Israel and form a security alliance with the US. They would butcher the Shia population of Iran / Gaza / Hezbolah / etc if they could.
Glad we found the teenage keyboard warrior! Thought this would've been past your bedtime.
Pretty much agree with every word of this.
The one thing is, part of the deal with making millions as a senior leader of a firm, is that you don't get to do some things that ordinary folks get to do. Like run your mouth at protestors, or anything else that can lead to a public embarrassment. He has a responsibility to a lot of people, and if the behavior costs Moelis even one deal it's a few million bucks lost.
So I just think he should've recognized, he doesn't get to behave like you or I would. But otherwise, more power to him and I hope he gets a 2nd chance.
Telling people to stop supporting terorrists is wrong isn't it? Pretty sure they harrased him first.
What I read (which may be out of date now, so please source what you're seeing) is that he saw a bunch of pro-Palestinian protestors and told them "you're backing the wrong side."
So, no. He didn't tell anyone to stop supporting "terrorists" and he absolutely engaged with them first. They escalated by throwing a drink at him. And then he slugged someone in the face. As I said, an escalating series of confrontations, but one he began and one in which he started the real violence. All of which displays absolutely awful judgement on his part.
He's an idiot. Whether he's right or wrong in confronting those people or in responding with violence is immaterial to that point. He should know better.
Regardless of if his reaction was justified or not, this incident is a terrible look for Moelis. The only reason he would not be let go would be if he brings in a lot of money for them. This can't be the first time this dude has reacted in a bizarre way. At 52, your first instinct is not usually to deck someone, unless you have issues. The last time I decked someone was in middle school.
I have to assume that he was attacked physically because punching someone in the face as retaliation for insults is unhinged
So is harassing a bunch of protestors. Don't overthink it. The guy has awful judgement and displayed that repeatedly, if the reporting is even halfway accurate
The only reason I am suggesting he was physically ( I do not know what is true or not true) attacked is because his reaction would not make much sense for an educated and professional adult
Impulse reacting is the worst: walk away, find out who their parents and friends are, and figure out ways for them to lose their jobs. Then, find out where they are living, file a civil suit for damages, and figure out ways for contractors to put liens on their family's property or have them evicted. Find what coffee shop or bar they work out and make sure to make their life miserable. When everyone forgets about them, bam, that's your time to strike when they are at the bottom. If they are in school, put pressure on the school behind closed doors or professors. Trust me it's NYC you can pay a homeless person to do some crazy stuff and just sic that person on them.
