“Life is important for it contains the seed of eternity.” - St. Francis de Sales

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

"The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time." -Jack London

Life is short, and the finite nature of it is what makes it special. I sleep hoping that if I don't wake, I will have made the most of the time that I've had. Both of my grandfathers undoubtedly did. My dad didn't. I know which approach to life I'd rather.

The Craig Bond movies know how to use them. The Tennyson quote from Skyfall is great too.

"Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."

I'll edit this with some quotes later, but not everyone wants to live forever. That's one of the themes in LOTR, the elves live forever but then endure eternal grief eventually as things in the physical world wither away and their happiness is gone as things become a shell of themselves.

Living a life with meaning is good, and a long life can be great, but it's important to stop and smell the roses sometimes while they're in full bloom, not once they've withered.

"Any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now. We will never be here again." - Homer

Fine I believe some wouldn’t wanna live forever, but no one, deep down, no one is okay with two-ish decades of youth, then you are old, then dead.

I don't think anyone is "okay" with it. I think some people, like many in this thread, simply except it as a reality and instead of focusing on maximizing their time, they try to focus on maximizing how they spend their time.

Not to be condescending here, but part of growing up is knowing what you can change or impact and what you can't. Put all of your energy into impacting what you can, but learn to accept what you can't.

I definitely don't want to live forever.  I'm already bored out of my mind now as it is, having done 99% of what I wanted to in life (I kept a bucket list).   I also got dealt a bad hand physically and it's always been a social hindrance, so the sooner I'm out of the game, the better.  I'm completely satisfied w/ everything I've done or accomplished because I did my best with what I had and made a go of it and generated some great memories.

When you've run out of stuff you find interesting to do or own and life starts to close most of its doors to you, it then becomes a slog. Do you really want another 130 years of going to the movies, having a boss or working jobs you hate, sitting in airplanes, eating out, picking up chicks, asking your wife about her day, and making small talk?  After the first 60-70 years it would be repetitive as hell. Groundhog Day, basically.  Jesus Christ that's depressing.

So how does knowing you live forever bring you any more joy? like you have no urgency or timeline to find out what you should be doing.

Juts bc you miserable in 80 years, doesn't mean you wont be miserable for the rest of eternity until you like, work on the fact you're miserable

The time is now. If you die it is too late. Eternity is the fruit of the seed of life.

There is a massive urgency and timeline there isn’t enough time to do the shit you need to do that’s part of the point.

And I have no clue how to have that perspective of the dude before you saying he is already bored.

I love doing so many different things especially as I age and become more able to be financially strong so I can do more things.

But, like, the time for all this shit - it’s not enough. People here saying they would get bored and it’s depressing idk if that’s how you feel about life and you are miserable right now so that life’s, well, miserable, I don’t even know what to say to that.

Uhhh idk I feel like there’s gotta be some MFers out there that are like man life can be so sick and there’s so much shit to learn and see and do and technology not yet invented how fucking lame I’m going to miss out on thousands of years of shit and that me and everyone I love and know will relatively soon have never existed. It will be like before we were all born. Literally that. How is that not soul crushing IDK

It's always updated versions of the same shit, no?    Every story has already been told so things just get kinda repetitive.   I think once you've done 30 years everything repeats, and not for the better.  I used to be an avid gamer - nowadays video games are just interactive 20-hour movies with the same mission types.  Who's got that kind of time??    I used to love rap - now everyone either sings or mumbles all over the track.   Movie effects have somehow gotten WORSE from when I was a teen.   How much small talk can you make before zoning out at the similarity and mundaneness of our interactions?  How many touchdowns or game-winning shots can you watch? Vacations can you take?   More than time I feel like I'm running out of patience for most things.

I guess it's a long-winded way of saying that most things just get less exciting the more you see them.  Life is ultimately about relationships, people, and the ones who love you. It's not about living to see the next iphone or whatever.

My only real regret is that I won't have time to get through my dream reading list.  I barely get to leisure read now and there are literally thousands of great books I'll be missing out on.  That, and I've probably maxed out the number of languages I'll ever know (3).  I do lament that learning for the sake of it becomes a significant luxury as we get older.

“It is the knowledge that I'm going to die that creates the focus that I bring to being alive; the urgency of accomplishment; the need to express love; now, not later. If we live forever, why ever even get out of bed in the morning? Cause you always have tomorrow. That's not the kind of life I want to lead.” -neil degrasse tyson
