Real Estate Capital Markets in Atlanta??
Hi WSO,
I am hunting for a good real estate capital markets job in Atlanta. Preferably not investment banking as I don't like the hours. I work as an Analyst in the Transaction Real Estate group of EY in New York. I worked in real estate investment banking at a New York boutique for a year and half before joining EY - so i've put in the hours already.
I can't find anything decent in ATL. SunTrust is always hiring but that's ibanking. I know Raymond James also has a large ibanking real estate group there.
Is there any private equity or capital markets, or advisory role (sell-side) that doesn't involve me working until 2am in the morning?
Does anyone working in banking in ATL know employers that I should be talking to??
Much appreciated 100 times over!!
H.
CBRE, Cushman, JLL, HFF, Grandbridge (BB&T) and Walker & Dunlop all have active capital markets groups in Atlanta. Good luck.
Eastdil also has a strong group in Atlanta that handle pretty much any and all portfolio CRE deals in the South East.
Is there a particular property type you are interested in? ATL has a few specialized firms: ex. Hunter Hotel Advisers
Otherwise, you could work on capital mkts side for a REPE company: RADCO or Wood Partners (both mostly multifamily)
ATL has several REITs as well. Middle market lending is an option too. (Ares, NXT Capital, etc.)
Hope this helps
I'm not in the Atlanta area anymore, but here is a rough list of what I know. Some are remote offices, others are HQs. PM me if you want to chat.
PERE: -Stockbridge -Colony Capital -Jamestown -Clarion Partners -LaSalle Investment Management -MetLife RE Investors -Rialto Capital -Trimont RE Advisors -ARES
REITs: -Cousins -Cortland Partners -Piedmont REIT -Columbia Property Trust -Parkway Properties -Duke Realty
Stockbridge is hiring an associate in Atlanta. I'd look for the job posting , but I'm lazy right now.
Thanks so much guys. Yes CRE-Finance, REPE is ideal but i'm hoping for the flexibility of working on several asset classes, if possible. Diversified REPEs, or perhaps large pension funds and asset managers, like Manulife or CPPIB that would have a RE Asset Management arm, RE debt capital markets arm, etc.
Count_Chocula, you're right on the money! That's a good opportunity i'll apply for.
Indexmatch that's a great list i'll PM you after work.
This is great guys thanks for all the help!!
No worries, happy to pass it along. As an aside, the LIM office in Atlanta is pretty Asset Management focused; I'm almost 100% that there are no acquisition personnel based out of there. Starwood also has an office in Cumberland. Check out Portman Holdings as well. If you ask me, unless you get in at Jamestown, that Stockbridge gig is the best one around right now.
Agreed
militiamc - curious why ATL over NYC?
I know Trimont has a couple open AM positions as well in Atlanta.
indexmatch I am taking a couple of factors into consideration when I look for my next gig. The major considerations are location of family and cost of living
bumping this to see if anyone has info on Stockbridge. looks like it was started from a spin off of PaineWebbers first RE fund. Browsed their site and deal flow looks strong (also a decent amount of former RREEF folks...idk what that means). have heard through the grapevine about new clients/commitments. just haven't heard too much about the culture. everything seems to point in a good direction, but curious if anyone has any additional information.
All of my parentheticals look like ass
What're your thoughts on Lending? I know Greystone has a Freddie Mac SBL office down there, which has tremendous deal flow.
I never worked with them, but I do know some guys over there and your comment on their deal flow is correct. They do a ton, and I like the people I know there and they seem to work hard with relatively reasonable hours. For MF lending (where I've spent most of my time), the top teams in the area are Walker and Dunlop (Craig West and co., we work with them on a national basis), CBRE (Robert LaChapelle), JLL (Faron Thompson and John Bray), and possibly Greystone (can't comment to intimately about volume as I haven't worked a deal with them). I'm sure I'm missing some power players as all of the national shops have a presence.
Greystone is one of my firm's correspondents. I know their SBL team alone is targeting about $1.5B - $2.0B in originations for 2016. Pretty massive volume considering deal sizes are pretty small.
I'm a 1st year at Trimont Real Estate in Atlanta. Getting burned out hard. 13 hour days and no IB pay. Working on 35+ deals at once will do that to you.
Yeah, that was never a place I really wanted to work, and I feel like a lot of people burn out there and go do work somewhere else. Could be a fun place to be later in the cycle though.
