Seeking Advice for FT 2020 Recruiting

Hey WSOers,

I've been a long time lurker on this forum and I'm looking for some networking advice for FT recruiting. I've read hundreds of discussions on this form and I owe a great deal to actively contributing members for providing some sound advice about recruiting! I'm a rising senior at a semi-target who's going to be working at a 2nd tier PE FoF this summer and I know I won't be gaining directly transferable IB knowledge & skills but I'm hoping to re-recruit for IB & PE Analyst roles come recruiting season. I will be working hard to get that return offer from my current internship to gain some leverage and put me in a better spot.

First off, I had networked extensively for IB SA positions but was unsuccessful in securing a spot (despite getting 7-8 interviews). I do understand that there are fewer FT spots I did network for interviews with 50-60 junior bankers (at BBs & MMs) in the process and upped my interviewing skills this semester by studying the guides. Unfortunately, my gpa fell to 3.3ish this semester because I took very difficult senior-level classes early (I'm a finance major) and I know that puts me in a very weak position - I captain a club sports team for my college and had to travel for over 8-10 weekends for tournaments and nationals this semester which took away a lot of my studying time.

I need advice regarding networking so that I can best position myself for FT recruiting in august/sept/oct. Should I narrow my networking (coffee chats/info calls) to lower BBs and MMs considering my gpa doesn't meet the 3.5 cutoff mark for several top BBs and EBs? My internship ends early august so I'm making week-long networking trips to NYC, LA, SF & CHI before fall semester begins. Another question lingering in my head is should I limit myself to just one or two of the above cities and set up as many chats as I can or should I keep my options open?

I like the west coast more but I know NYC and northeast coast gives me a lot more options. Also, considering my low gpa, should I focus more on related jobs such as corporate development, F500 corpfin roles, asset management, etc.. or should I stay focused on IB? Last recruiting season, I landed 60-70% of my interviews from my network and I know it will be difficult to make a lot of networking calls during my internship as I am focusing on getting that return offer so I have to make the most out of the networking trips - I'm making the trip to NYC after the FT offers are made to SAs so that my network can help me know where there are spots available - I would also like to know how can I bring this up casually in a coffee chat. I know my gpa makes it difficult for junior bankers to vouch for me but I've had some success in getting along really well during most of my networking calls!
