Recommend me some TV shows

Ideally the show I'm looking for contains most of these attributes:
(1) draws me in within the first 5 minutes of the first episode (I have a low attention span).
(2) mentally stimulating
(3) good sense of humor (eg. Arrested Development is good, How I Met Your Mother and The Office are extremely fucking lame and I hate anyone who enjoys those shows)

A good example of what I'm talking about is House of Lies. It's both smart and hilarious. Suits is also good (mainly b/c of Harvey, the main character is kind of a faggot although I admire his intelligence).

Here are my opinions on other shows that I've watched or attempted to watch:
* Dexter - first season was incredible. 2nd and 3rd were good. I got bored once he got married
* Burn Notice - good although I stopped watching it a while ago
* Sherlock - decent
* Game of Thrones, watched 4 episodes but couldn't get into it
* Mad Men - watched 1.5 episodes and couldn't get into it
* White Collar - I hate that old guy and don't give a fuck about his relationship with his fat wife
* Breaking Bad - wasted 30 mins before saying "fuck this" (should've seen it coming though b/c I didn't find the premise even remotely interesting)
* Californication - gave it like 20 minutes I think
* Workaholics - stupid and not funny
* Seinfeld - Classic

Also I don't watch anime anymore but my high school self enjoyed the hell out of Death Note and Elfen Lied.

Ok given what I just said, recommend me some shows. Actually you can go ahead and recommend me movies too. Non-fiction is ok too.

Stop recommending me Suits I already said it was good (second paragraph of my original post). I've seen a couple episodes of Community and thought it was funny. I'm looking for something a little more "smart" though rather than just a pure comedy.

Sorry didn't realize so many of you would be butthurt over me dissing The Office. Wait, on second thought, no I'm not sorry.

Reruns of Jerry Springer. Midgets are always funny.

CNBC sucks "This financial crisis is worse than a divorce. I've lost all my money, but the wife is still here." - Client after getting blown up

there's more drama in one episode of this show than like a whole season of any other tv show. fuckin epic.

My girlfriend is a big fan. Kinda like How I Met Your Mother.

Good Wife is pretty good as well.

leveRAGE.:
Game of thrones.

I just cant get into the fantasy shows or movies. I still havent seen any of the Lord of the Rings movies.

I might check out the books for Game of Thrones first. Heard good things about them.

[quote=FinancialNoviceII]This show looks pretty good

, it actually does. Liked the top-rated comment best though. "It looks great, but it's NBC so they'll cancel it before it gets good. They always do."

For me, I'm a fan of a few USA shows: Burn Notice (easy watching, poor scripting at times but fun TV), White Collar, and Royal Pains. Also like Modern Family, and Archer is hilariously irreverent.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Currently airing new episodes? Game of thrones. Burn notice is coming back soon too; it's not a great show like game of thrones or treme, but it sure makes an hour go by quickly.

Overall? 30 Rock and Parks & Rec for comedy, and I would still say Game of Thrones for Drama. The Glades on A&E is fun though. Shark Tank for reality by a country mile.

Is Treme good? I was planning on watching it just based on the fact that David Simon made the Wire but I heard it was a bunch of crap. Might give it a look

Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld reruns.

In 1976, James Hunt broke the sound barrier through Eau Rouge only to retire before the event finished... following the race he had sex with three Belgian nurses at the clubhouse near La Source.

What I follow when I can...

Modern Family (Good) Community (Good) Dexter (Good, but trailing on) Entourage (I'm still in my teens so I'm aloud to watch this garbage) How I Met Your Mother (Good, until they started teasing the viewer, now it's getting annoying) Top Gear (VROOM!)

FinancialNoviceII:
As title says.

With Friday Night Lights finished, and Dexter kinda losing its lustre, there's not a lot to watch on TV.

I like The Killing but just cant get into Boardwalk Empire or Game of Thrones.

Thoughts?

was going to say Dexter

Justified just wrapped up its 2nd season. Great show. Definitely recommend it to everyone. Rescue Me is currently in its final season. Another awesome show. Denis Leary does a great job.

Heard good things about Justified. Might give it a watch

Kinda into Vampire Diaries. My girl watched it before we broke up and now I'm into it.

Same in Pretty Little Liars. The women are gorgeous"!

Currently airing - breaking bad, game of thrones, mad men, always sunny in philadelphia

the wire and the sopranos are easily the two best shows of all time though (and the wire is the clear cut #1, watch it immediately if you haven't yet)

I might have to agree with this entire post. I will add Justified and Archer as good current shows and Dexter season 1 as best season of any tv show ever. I used to hate American Dad, but I find it utterly hilarious now.

Also, different type of program so not in the running for best, but who has seen the Ross Kemp show? That guy is badass!

Weeds was great until the plot got all f'd up and confusing. Can't wait for Breaking Bad and Mad Men to return...

Not a huge fan of the wire.... cool plot but the eps are too long for me to care...

Too long?! They're like 10 minutes longer then Mad Men!

Check the season-7 of weeds. Nancy gets out of prison, the kids are all grown up and independent. I think the new season is better than ever. Agreed season 6 got a lil bit fucked up!!

Why is everyone ignoring GEORDIE SHORE, the UK version of JERSEY SHORE??? Unlike Jersey, Geordie has hot girls, boobs, constant hooking up, etc. They've been there for three nights so far, and this one kid has already hooked up with a total of four girls!!! More girls than nights!!!!!

Are you serious? Those shows are what's wrong with TV

The Killing

I like The Event also. I heard it's getting cancelled though, so I don't know how they will end the current season.

entourage and californication have gone downhill, although still worth watching. dexter is solid, first two seasons were the best but last season was good. the season with jimmy smits sucked

surprised nobody has mentioned shameless - big fan of it.

Really? I thought with Dexter, the seasons go in reverse order in terms of their strengths and how good they were, with Season 4 being fucking awesome. John Lithgow was great.

Havent caught up with Season 5 yet but heard bad things. I suppose its hard to follow up with how they left it at the end of 4.

Entourage has definitely taken a turn for the worse, stopped watching about last season.

Shameless hasnt gotten much publicity across the pond, weird as how its a copy from the British show so doubt they will show it here but Emmy Rossum is hot.

season 4 was really good, lithgow and the trinity killer plot were great, still think 1-2 are the best though

Comedy: It's Always Sunny in Philly (last season was very disappointing) 30 Rock The Office (past its golden days) How I Met Yo Mama (past its golden days) Community Entourage Curb Parks and Rec - apparently hired some new (more talented) writers

Drama: Game of Thrones Teletubbies

Game of Thrones is the shit man And the fantasy/magic elements are very discrete, if that's the only thing holding you back And how you still haven't seen Lord of the Rings is beyond me

Dude, I don't know how you can make it through LOTR. I got a quarter of the way through Fellowship on my first attempt and half way through on my second attempt.

HireUp212:

I might give it another chance.

I dont know man, I hate those fantasy films. I started watching the Fellowship of the Ring but fell asleep in the first 45 minutes. Perhaps the slowest moving movie in history. Doubt I'll give that another chance

Surprised at the lack of love for Boardwalk Empire - heralded as the new Sopranos. But was anything but.

Also the Big Bang Theory. I used to like it but it got weaker in its 3rd season.

TechSaaS_VC:
Anyone watch Workaholics? I watched a couple episodes and thought it was kind of dumb, but a bunch of my friends are swearing by it.

It's no Office or Sunny in Philly but it's good for some chuckles if you have the time to watch it.

Californication- personally thought the last season was the best yet Weeds- Definitely going downhill, we'll see how next season goes. South Park

@TechSaaS_VC I've seen a few episodes, wasn't thrilled. If you're looking for that type of humor, you're better off watching scrubs reruns.

PARKS AND RECREATION

Close Second: Modern Family Community The Office (diminishing quality but still good) South Park

Honorable Mention: Family Guy Cleavland Show Outsourced

I only watch comedy.

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Psych for me.

Shameless was pretty interesting... especially seeing Emmy Rossum naked.

+1 for Psych, it's a pretty entertaining show.

Jack: They’re all former investment bankers who were laid off from that economic crisis that Nancy Pelosi caused. They have zero real world skills, but God they work hard. -30 Rock

I got into Southland when it was still airing. Different from the traditional police bullshit shows, i.e. Blue Bloods. If I have to watch another one of those stupid scenes at the dinner table, I'd go crazy.

shera:
Top Gear, Archer

My response as well. Everyone should watch Archer - I don't find a lot of shows funny (I cannot believe anyone voluntarily watches Big Bang Theory and HIMYM, for example) but Archer is all sorts of awesome. Give it a try.

And Top Gear is great, probably won't find it as entertaining if you don't care at all about cars, but the hosts are hilarious regardless.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

I really like Steve Buscemi, but I can't get into Boardwalk. The greatest HBO shows are still the The Wire with the Sopranos coming in a close 2nd.

Shows on TV right now - 30 Rock is great. Doesn't get much better than Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan. Plus Tina Fey is a complete smoke show.

South Park still has it. I'm waiting for them to do an episode on Wall St. The royal Canadian Wedding was fucking hilarious.

"Eskimos are good for nothing! I paid one to give me a blow job once and all she did was rub her nose against my penis for 45 minutes and ask me to pay her!"

As of course is tradition.

I watch a lot of TV, and if you are looking for good reviews on TV check out hitfix.com and Alan Sepinwall, he does a really good job. With that said--

Best Dramas are by far Breaking Bad and Justified

If you want an older show that a lot of people probably haven't watched, but is according to many the best TV show ever created, check out The Wire from HBO

As far as comedy's go Parks and Recreation and Community are both really good, Community kind of goes out on a limb with a lot of things, where as Parks and Rec is more of a solid show week to week.

Weeds is coming back in a few weeks, but to be honest Nancy Botwin just sucks now, and the show went very downhill after season 4.

You like pizza, I like tacos. To each his own. Different strokes for different folks.

BUT any young guy who doesn't like at least one of 30 Rock, The Office, and/or It's Always Sunny is probably weird and boring.

30 rock is and has been for a while the funniest show on television by a mile. And I've watched every other show mentioned here. A bit of a TV snob -- if such a thing REALLY exists.

Warhead:

Alec Baldwin carries that show. Fucking hate Jenna.

Game of Thrones seems to be getting an overwhelming number of votes. Checking it out now ...

Me too. Gonna have to give it another try. It may be like other shows where the pilot sucked but picks up. First episode of Dexter I hated.

Justified is great. But I'm surprised there is so much love for it and not for Sons of Anarchy. SOA is insane. Historically, FX creates ridiculous shows. NIP/TUCK is my fave of all time.

eriginal:
SPARTACUS. If you like epic fight scenes/sex scenes this is your show. It's like Gladiator combined with 300 in TV series format, how has no one mentioned this?

Forgot about Spartacus. From what I heard it got interrupted due to the main actor getting cancer, but it's supposed to come back on and continue with the first season's plot. Great, great show, though wasn't as big a fan of the second "season" (if you can call it a season given its brevity).

Have you guys read the books behind Game of Thrones? They're definitely very solid, would recommend them to anyone with a fair amount of spare time.

Definitely a fan of Breaking Bad / Dexter / Community / Modern Family. The strongest season of Dexter was either the second (with Doakes) or the ..fourth? with Trinity. The most recent one was shit comparatively. For those of you who watch Community, I'm really hoping that Chevy Chase hasn't been written out of the show. Thoughts?

GoodBread:
I'm pretty sure Chevy Chase is out, either completely or a least as a regular. Him and Chang were legitimately unsettling at some points in the season which was weird considering how hysterical they were in the first.

I'm afraid the show is Chang-ing too much.

Edmundo Braverman:
Sean Bean of Game of Thrones stabbed outside London bar defending his lady's honor:

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

That's a funny story. I especially like the comments about how "fake and ugly" the girl is, as if any of them could land anything marginally approaching her.

Patrick Bateman would eat Eddie Morra's lunch (and probably his brains).

Does anyone else watch Sherlock? It's a modern take on the Sherlock Holmes adventures by BBC, with rights to air it in the US owned by PBS. It's only had one season so far, with ~3 episodes per season (few episodes but each one is about 90min uninterrupted).

If you like the stories and/or mystery shows, check it out.

Game of Thrones got better and better as the season progressed. Episode 4 was the only bad one. Last half of the season was EPIC.

It'll be interesting to see how the war plays out (no spoilers please from the book readers), how they show the battles and stuff...war scenes could require a massive set and cast/crew.

Anybody here watch the new show Suits on USA Network? Just finished watching the 2nd episode and it's pretty good so far.

Dexter was great up until this past season, hopefully they bring it back around for season 6. Modern family still takes the cake for me though

Suits looks like it'll be a good summer series. Pilot made me happy, catching the 2nd episode online this weekend.

Just started watching this one and I like it. It's pretty cheesy but entertaining as hell. Acting isn't bad either.

As for HBO- True Blood has gotten weird but I'm not going to abandon it. I'll stick it out with Entourage for the last 8 episodes. Game of Thrones is awesome, and I might start the books this summer if I get time. I couldn't really get into Treme or Boardwalk Empire (I tried desperately to get hooked but it just didn't do it for me).

Whoever pointed out Sherlock was spot on. I saw the first 3 on my Dad's recommendation.

I watch Castle with the girlfriend.

"For I am a sinner in the hands of an angry God. Bloody Mary full of vodka, blessed are you among cocktails. Pray for me now and at the hour of my death, which I hope is soon. Amen."

Any HBO series is clearly the best, but they just figured out a winning formula.

BLUE MOUNTAIN STATE (BMS) is a great show that will never be recognized.

USA has definitely up'd its game this summer.

loving Suits, Royal Pains is decent if nothing else is on, Necessary Roughness is great, Covert Affairs makes me want to re-evaluate my career.

I'm addicted to the First 48 and Criminal Minds

"There are only two opinions in this world: Mine and the wrong one." -Jeremy Clarkson

Hmm, Covert Affairs turned out decent? I got through the pilot and half of the second episode and shut it off. Lost my interest, seemed too phony and not engaging enough.

Love USA shows in general though. Is it worth looking at?

Also, just got into Sons of Anarchy over the holiday weekend and watched the entire first season in a marathon. Addicting, which is weird because I have almost nothing in common with any of the characters. Riveting show though. Starting Game of Thrones when I get up to date on SOA.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.
