Importance of GPA for Asset Management?
I am currently a Junior at a new school (semi target/target) this year, and pursuing a career in the AM field. I already have a gig lined up for the summer at a pretty solid shop, but feel I may want to re-recruit or pivot into a different area of the field (private credit) after this internship. However, I am concerned that my grades this semester might inhibit my ability to get into a better role. I just transferred to a new school this year as an econ major, and am getting beaten up badly by some of the weed-out courses this semester. My cumulative college GPA will likely be just above a 3.5 after this semester, and my GPA at this institution will not be pretty (barely above a 3.0). How much will this hurt my chances of getting looks at some higher regarded firms? I think my GPA probably matters a little bit less since this isn't IB, but not sure to what degree. My new school's econ department is pretty notorious for grade deflation (average gpa is a 2.9), not to mention the curriculum feels like it has absolutely nothing to do with anything I will need in this career. I was able to get pretty far in the interview process with great firms this past fall, ultimately got dinged and waitlisted a few times, but this was before I even had a GPA at my new school. I also have lots of internship and other field experience for my age, and feel I'm pretty qualified for most roles in AM, GPA aside. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully calm my nerves a bit before finals start :/
nontargettransfer, pure crickets, that's where I come in. Any of these useful?

I hope those threads give you a bit more insight.
Also a Junior In Econ. I’ll pass on some advise I got from this forum. If they don’t ask for it don’t put it. If it gets brought up in an interview hit them with: “I was told to not put my GPA if it is sub 3.5”. They will probably then ask you if it’s over a 3.0, which you respond yes to regardless of if it’s true or not. I got a sophomore internship in AM by doing this. Not endorsing lying but sometimes the ends justify the means.
This situation will not help you. You're gonna need to find a way to get some relevant experience. If you can prove you can do the job, no one cares about GPA. But without something compelling, GPA is an easy way to screen people.
I feel like I already have lots of experience as I've done three internships and have very senior roles in my schools investment clubs and finance societies so hopefully this won't have as bad of an impact as I am dreading lol
Unfortunately, no one I know is too concerned about investment clubs at school. However, if you have three solid internships, that could be a game changer if you say good things in the interview. Nonetheless, you should try to get your GPA up if possible. A 3.3 with good experience might work okay, a 2.7 will be tougher to talk your way out of.
Worst case scenario at the end of this semester my cumulative College GPA will still be above a 3.5, just it won't be very good at the new institution I transferred to (still above 3.0 though) so I'll likely just omit that from my resume
Ok so put the cumulative on your resume. Once you get an interview, GPA will be less important, and a 3.5 sounds fine.
Great, thanks for your insight!
