IB looks more and more impossible to break into for me. What should I do ?

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re all doing well!

I’m a fourth-year student at Université Paris-Dauphine (the French Master’s system runs five years, so I’m in M1). Next year I’ll take a mandatory gap year and complete two six-month internships

First internship secured: Proparco : the private-sector financing arm of Agence Française de Développement (French DFI)

My long-term goal (still evolving) is something between finance, economics and public policy, so something like Sovereign advisory, or Public-sector consulting (similar to what McKinsey undertakes in Africa & the Middle East)

Because Dauphine isn’t a traditional “target school” for these paths, I’m aiming for the most rigorous, brand-name experience I can land now, hoping it will open doors later

So I am here to ask for your help please :

  • Resume Critique : Does my background give me a realistic shot at those IB desks (EM M&A / FIG M&A / DCM) for my second internship ?
    • I know that multiple interns that had the same internship at Proparco secured FIG DCM internships

  • Career advice : I understand that I am still a student without ACTUAL finance or IB experience, and everything I know is just from people I talked to, so I'd love to ask for your advice about which roles or firms that would position me well for a career at the intersection of finance and policy, and still be prestigious enough to not close any doors

Any feedback, suggestions, or success stories are greatly appreciated !

Thank you so much !

I’ll just comment on the resume formatting itself. The template is great, but you have a ton of “white space”. Get length of your bullets to at least where the dates begin. This makes the resume look more “full” and “accomplished”. Show the action and result, drop in as many words that an applicant screening system will pick up on. Stretch the truth a tad if needed, but be able to speak to everything on your resume.

I’d take the high school out of the education section. (I am in the US so don’t know the norms there)

Will do ! Thank you for your response.

One follow-up please : Is it best to take key words directly from the job posting and weave them into the resume ? And from an Analyst's viewpoint, if this resume landed on your desk, would it grab your attention or end up in the discard pile?

Could definitely help. For example, if you were targeting say a LevFin/Credit Role, pulling words such as Leveraged, Credit Analysis, Financial Statements, Analysis, Modeling, Execution are all words that could help flag whatever screening system is being used.

For throwing a resume away/passing it along, I tend to look at education/experience/interests. The first two are just to check a box, the interest section is to see if the person is a piece of stale bread or not. Seeing “Competitive Uno” or “Katanas” or “Chicago Marathon Medalist” definitely stands out versus the usual “Running” “Poker” “Hiking”. Also back to my prior response, two resumes can be identical with accomplishments, but one being fully filled out with the bullets will be passed along over the one that doesn’t seem as filled out. Subliminally one person “seems” better.

Well noted, thank you :) !

Under interests, I used to list deltiology (I've collected over 1000 postcards), and was #1 contributor to the Moroccan Arabic Wikipedia, might be time to add them back in haha
