Question about moving up within a firm such as Morgan Stanley?

Ok let's throw this scenario out there, let's say that someone was working in college as an intern at Morgan Stanley in Baltimore; they then eventually received an offer. Would an offer most likely come from Baltimore or New York, and could they apply to work in New York instead? So let's say they end up working in Baltimore for Morgan Stanley how long would it take to transfer over to a position in New York and if you excel does it happen often? I know this a pretty large scenario but I am looking at the possibility of interning/co-oping at the Morgan Stanley in Baltimore, and I was wondering for my future career if I end up as an analyst would I ever be able to get to New York. Thanks so much for the help.

MS in Baltimore is all back office operations. If you receive an offer after an internship, it will be for Baltimore. Yes, if you are very good you can transfer to a middle office role in NYC, or any other MS office in the world (given there is an open position that you qualify for). As of the last time I checked, MS had an 18 month policy, meaning you have to be in your current role for 18 months before switching jobs within the firm. Also note, that it will be near impossible to switch from MS Baltimore to IBD, as almost all MS Baltimore jobs support S&T in some way. A good friend of mine just left MS Baltimore for another firm after nearly three years of trying to move to a more front office trading role. It's not easy, especially given the layoffs in trading.

Very blunt and to the point - however, also brutally honest.

Damn, just a few minutes before me. Exactly what I said, too.

The Baltimore office is just operations. I think they might have a bit of MSSB there too, but that is PWM/AM (not sure). If you are interested in operations, then by all means go for it. I'm sure transferring from Baltimore operations to NY operations would not be too difficult if you excel. I think it would be tough to transfer from MS operations to MS FO in NY. Definitely consider searching for internships at other companies in Baltimore. For example, Stifel Nicolaus has an office in Baltimore and T. Rowe Price is based in Baltimore. A job with either of them doing ER would be better than MS operations.
