Transfer to UNC from UNC-C for a shot at Charlotte banks?

Hey guys,

First time poster here. I was hoping some of you could provide some insight for my situation. I started college at UNC Charlotte this year with the intention of eventually going to medical school along the road. This is a complete non-target and I only went because the grants cover my tuition and I commute from home, which pretty much makes this a free degree. Certain experiences have made me realize that I have no passion for healthcare and I have been looking into finance for a while now.

Now I am wondering if I should transfer to UNC Chapel Hill, but I know it will be near impossible to get into KF as a transfer, and many of my business credits won't transfer, so I will have to settle with Economics if I do get in. I do prefer the finance major at UNC Charlotte. My goal is to stay in Charlotte for banking, preferably at an MM or BofA/Wells, although I know the chances are slim to none from my current school. I do really like it at UNC Charlotte and I feel like I can network around to our few alumni's at boutique banks (and one at Lazard) and score some internships, even during fall/spring times, because I'm right here in Charlotte, and have that advantage at least. If my best efforts don't get me anywhere, I would apply to Vandy/Nova for MSF and try again. On the other hand, I could attempt to transfer to UNC Chapel Hill and actually get access to OCR, but obviously I would come second to KF students, and may have to stay an additional year in school as well as pick up some loans and adjust to UNC.

I have a 3.8 gpa so far, and one irrelevant internship. High school grades were good (4.6), but I'm not absolutely certain I can get into UNC.

My question is should I stay at UNCC and network my butt off or attempt to transfer to UNC for better opportunities? Will it really make a huge difference for Charlotte banks?

@futurectdoc Yes, I will be applying as a junior transfer. my SAT was good but its not required for junior transfers. I've looked into the others but UNC is pretty much my only choice because of in-state tuition. Do you think there is zero chance if I stay?

@futurectdoc Thank you for help! Congrats on getting into Duke MMS, that is also one of my choices for grad school if I don't transfer. If you don't mind me asking, what you do think made you stand out as a candidate, as they seem to ask questions like 'What is your And?' You are right, some private schools are worth it, I guess I'll have to look into it. I'm just stuck on free tuition and proximity to plenty of MM/boutiques here. But I suppose I need to do more research.

Hi heels757,

Thanks for your response. It won't let me PM you because I don't have enough banana points haha. I will be going in as a junior transfer so it might be a little harder, but I am okay with the economics degree as long as it still opens up more opportunities than UNCC. Do you think if I end up as an Economics student that I will be at that big of a disadvantage as compared to KF students?

1) Apply to those other top schools first

2) If you don't get into any of them, say at UNCC, the marginal cost outweighs the benefit of going to UNCCH

3) Gun for those boutique internships for your sophomore summer, and if fruitful, leverage those for junior year

4) If unsuccessful, utilize your plan for a top MSF, and you'll be fine since you seem like an intelligent person

As a UNC-CH KFBS student, I know plenty of transfer students in the business school. Don't assume that it's out of reach. Not sure who your contacts are, but I know multiple transfers from UNCC that felt there was much more opportunity coming from KF, but I'm not positive if any of them scored internships. Worst case, it probably wouldn't hurt to apply and decide from there.

@kenstonkid12 Thanks for the information, I've been mostly going off of what I heard online, but that's nice to hear. That's true, I'm going to definitely give it some thought, but I do like UNCC so I hope some extensive networking from here will help me out if not.

Is UNC-CH the Charlotte or Chapel Hill campus?

It's the Chapel Hill campus.

I have assured admissions to the undergraduate business school, so it's good to hear that they have great recruitment out of there.

How difficult would it be to get into a BB from UNC as compared to so of the schools mentioned? This is assuming stellar grades and decent ECs/experience from both.

seedy underbellyNYU-Stern, Cornell-AEM, Michigan-Ross, Georgetown-MSB, UChicago, Northwestern, Duke, Virginia-Mcintyre, Penn-CAS, Brown (relatively low acceptance rate but worth a shot since it isn't insanely low).

You reccomend looking at Ross but say Brown has a relatively low acceptance rate? 1% of Ross' most recent class came from external transfer students.

If you wouldn't mind Chicago opportunities over SE/NYC opportunities, look into UChicago and Northwestern.

NYU is always a possibility, but beware the Stern curve. IMO Penn CAS may be a downgrade because he would be overshadowed by Wharton. Cornell sure, McIntire and MSB are splitting hairs IMO.

UNC has great recruiting and you're in a great position. If you are thinking about transferring, shoot high. Otherwise I don't think it's worth it. Settle in at CH, get some leadership positions, and kick the shit out of your classes and you'll get more than a fair shot coming out of Kenan-Flagler.

wtf don't transfer, unless you get into an ivy school. UNC is great. It will be hard to get into IB, but its hard everywhere. If you are in the business school already stay put not worth the hassle. you have a huge alumni, just network your ass off. Charlotte is growing rapidly in terms of ibanking.

Hey, OP, wanna trade places? I hear UNC-CH is the tits, as it were.
