Advice needed for highschool student

N.B. I wasn't sure where to post this topic so I put it in 'Monkeying Around' to avoid spamming more serious sections

Hey guys, I'm a 16 year old high school student( grade 11) living in Canada (Montreal, QC). I would like to work in a hedge-fund one day and would like to familiarize myself with will wall-street and the world of business all together. I realize that I am a new member and haven't really contributed to this community yet, but I would be very grateful if someone could give me some simple guidelines on where to start/ what to start with. I am currently taking all the required courses and getting good grades but the closest I've come to any actual experience with 'business' is my iPhone stock market game and a provincial 'start your own business' competition called "Jeunes Entreprises". Thank you in advance!

Regards, A motivated student

  1. Go a target college. These are the schools companies recruit at the most
  2. Enjoy your youth a bit: you can't take the money to hell with you

To add to the comments above, make sure to have diverse coursework and do more than study. There's absolutely no need to triple major in accounting/finance/financial engineering, for example. You'll come across as one-dimensional. Many top hedge funds are just as interested in social/extracurricular activities as what you studied...

This is even more important when you consider that you may very well change your interests over the next 4-5 years and would want to do something that's not in finance...

In no particular order

  • Network as much as possible
  • Have fun, but be smart enough to not get a police record
  • Try to move yourself into leadership positions in clubs/groups you are interested in
  • Don't spend all your time stuck in your room studying, but try to maintain a B+ average
  • Go the the gym, eat healthy
  • Be smart with your money
  • Enjoy the single life in college
  • Do your best to use your network to get a few good internships

Also if you can afford it and have the grades try to get into exeter or a similar prep school

You can apply to American schools...

Should probably only be applying to US schools.

I thought of just doing my secondary school and CEGEP (its an extra two years that people who live in Quebec have to do after grade11) and then going to McGil. You guys don't think that will cut it? :/

PS: Is being able to speak fluently in french a desirable asset on wallstreet

Thanks guys!

If you work in france then its an asset. The reason I said go to a prep school like Exeter is because it is a feeder school for IVYs.
