You said it doesn't have to be realistic, and I know this is very unrealistic and pretty dark, but I want to try to get people I know who are using heroin and other opiates to seek treatment and stop. I lost yet another person I cared about to it a couple weeks ago. That brings my personal total up to 6. Fucking sick of this shit. Too many grieving parents and parent-less kids because of it. Only getting worse during COVID. I say it's unrealistic because the current system in the US doesn't work very well and it gets a grip on you that is very hard to break, especially for some of the people I know who are/were in too deep.

All you can do is be willing to help when they are ready to accept it. I've been sober for close to a year now and the idea of sobriety genuinely repulsed me when it's necessity was made clear to me by family. My life is incredible today and I wouldn't trade it for anything but it was a slog to get to this point and the prospect of being sober was borderline comical to me when it became my reality. While this doesn't work for everyone (and almost certainly doesn't for those no longer under their parent's roof) an ultimatum can help. I haven't even turned 20 yet -- I got sober before I could even take a legal drink. My choice was seek treatment or find myself roaming the streets of a suburban town in the middle of winter. I threw in the towel to keep a roof over my head... but not everyone will do the same. I'm a kid and I luckily was scared straight -- every addicts situation is different. The harsh reality of addiction is that people die. Be there for those you care about, try to push them in the right direction, gauge the response, and make a judgement call. It's a twisted disease with no clear cut solution. An actively using addict is also by no means themselves. Their thoughts are obscure and hard to comprehend, their reactions are rarely ever fitting, and their ability to rationalize and/or justify is uncanny. I know because I have been there. Wishing you the best and thinking of those that are suffering. Hope this helped in some way. Reach out if you have any questions, more than willing to answer them.

Thanks a ton for this response, I really do appreciate you sharing your story with me. I am just blown away that some people can't seem to quit, even though the reasons are right in front of them. The guy who passed recently had a four year old daughter. Really cute, happy, friendly kid. I had hoped that could be enough--everyone did. But it just became clear that even that wasn't enough. From shooting up behind her to being found dead in the bathroom like 20 feet from where she was playing, it really just seems like nothing works for some people. Really devastating stuff. The town and surrounding towns I grew up in have been getting rocked by this crisis for years and COVID has seemed to only make things worse, just when they finally seemed like they were starting to turn the corner a tiny bit.

I felt the same during the crack era, growing up in Harlem as a younging but we were called, "predators," "animals," "thugs," said to be acting "buck wild." Not victims who needed to be healed. Seen so many cats lose their life to that real heavy drug shit. Fatherless homes, motherless homes, dead children left and right. Na' mean? I almost fucked my life up. We were criminalized though. 3 strike laws in '94. They doubled down. In '87 the "system" created a new legislation that said crack was 100 keys to one key of powder of cocaine. "Throw those hooligans in jail and throw away the keys" they said.

But you know, we had a different skin tone so the ill shit and the propaganda made sense to the masses and we needed to be reeled in. "law and order" they said. Now, "the government needs to help these poor helpless children" is all I'm hearing lately. "It's different now" they're telling me. Opioid and heroin affecting predominantly white kids/white america so apparently, its an epidemic because... Nvm let me just stop there. I made my point.

As far as the system goes, its just as fine as it was in the 80s/90s. I don't think it needs to be reformed or changed in any way. Addicts of opiates today, should be treated the exact same as the crack addicts on 139 & Lenox Ave, Edenwald, Brownsville, and etc. I might even argue that opiate addicts are treated a lot better, and done so with more empathy. "Just don't do drugs" they told us. I'm here telling opiate addicts that today.

Turning my generation (younger millennials) and Gen Z from bunch of entitled snowflakes into well-principled and hard-working people who have 0 time to waste on all the bigoted and fruitless discussions and cultural trends happening nowadays. (Edited because I'm trying not to single out out "woke"ness but I just mean the generational descent into having politics as quasi-religious beliefs to chant not opinions to discuss).

Coming from a country whose grandparent's generation experienced everything from poverty, war, and drastic economic growth and whose parent's generation built on the work of my grandparent's generation by turning a developing country into one of the richest places on Earth, I grew up listening to stories of hardship, perseverance, and resilience.

My grandparents always talked about how most basic food items we can just buy from grocery store nowadays were so scarce. They also talked about what they saw during war time (bodies, civilian executions, etc...), how their families fled, and all the destruction. My grandfather also lost his parents when he was 12 so it was just him and his siblings. He sometimes talks about how his older sister pretty much raised him and his brother. My great-aunt, who passed away before I was born unfortunately, worked her ass off to make end's meet and supported my grandfather all the way until my grandfather got into medical school on a scholarship.

What's crazy is that everyone has the same stories. Every single friend from my home country grew up listening to stories very similar to ones I heard. There is something inspiring about an entire generation going through the exact same experience of turning a war-torn country filled with poverty to one of the wealthiest economic powerhouse in the world. And then to be part of the generation where everyone you know grew up listening to the same tales of hardship... All it took was some grit, relentless work ethic, and the will to make things better for the future generation. If that doesn't inspire you, idk what will.

I moved to America because I thought this is the place that shares the same values of hard-work without the prejudices of my home country (ageism, relentless cultural homogeneity that doesn't tolerate different thoughts, uncreative and unentrepreneurial mindset, etc...).

America, to me, is the place where anyone can make it big regardless of what your choice of profession is. But the way things are nowadays really worries me. America's youth seems to have lost what made America so great - no hard work, no real problem solving, and a new push for relentless cultural homogeneity of thought in the name of "progressivism". Without a hard-working people tolerant of different views and solid problem solving skills, how can America maintain itself?

OP asked for your wildest most ambitious goal in life and yours is to what- own liberals boss-style? This is somehow sadder than the commies playing identity politics. You gotta stop letting these people live rent-free in your head.

To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering.

I wish I could figure out how to kick these people out of my head. It's been quite unhealthy last couple of days.

I got a little emotional and should probably edit my comment but what I really want to do is 1) get work ethics back into our systems, 2) end bigotry of all forms.

It just so happens that the biggest bigots in my generation are these "woke" people. Introducing new forms of prejudices to fight prejudices of the past? Yeah that's exactly the solution.

Loss of work ethics is a generational threat. If you are as much of a history buff as I am, then you know that great civilizations fall because one generation decided to completely lose its work ethics and focus all its energy on bigoted discussions instead.

I came to America to make it big but if my generation is about to ruin America, why the hell am I here?

Here's an analogy. Think of America as Kodak before it fell and my generation as executives who are just about to stop pusuing digital cameras.

It could definitely be Korea. Homogeneity, brutal war, militarism, rock-solid work ethic, rapid development etc. All these things occurred under the watch of the US as an ally and protector and for that reason, many Koreans look up to the US. The sad thing is that Koreans actually have to do a lot more than Americans to keep their society free and prosperous in terms of long work hours, mandatory (and harsh) military service, and competitive academics. If I was Korean and came to the US thinking it was a promised land, I'd be in disbelief at how many people aren't held to any kind of standard in the United States

Haha your a bit late for that. You are just going to have to see how things pan out , we are still hardworking perhaps not the same way generations before us were but naturally people at a disadvantage or a burden on their shoulder are going to work harder because their reward is a more comfortable life. If you are within that comfort and have those devices that assist with instant gratification there is really no reason for them to try.

I totally hear you on the "treating politics as quasi-religious beliefs" especially when it comes to things like those "political compass memes"

I feel like a lot of kids who are perpetually online are just trying to fill that mental niche that would normally be occupied with community or religion with a new "hip" and secular form of religion - that being extreme political ideology - be it your trendy twitter cappuccino communist or your edgy 4chan wehraboo

On one hand I think it might be because they just have too much free time but on the other hand I know that's not always true. There are plenty of people with regular jobs who fall into political ideologies. It's human nature almost to fall into some sort of belief system.

It'd be much healthier for the society if that belief system was apolitical and highly personal. Or if that belief system was grounded I'm values of love, open-mindedness, and thoughtful conversations. But I don't know enough (I know nothing about psychology) about psychology to tell whether that is possible or not.

Certain things are just impossible because the nature of human beings present limitations. The more I live and read, the more I realize this. Luckily, human knowledge about our nature and what happened when we interact with one another (fields of psychology, robotics, political science, and even neuroscience) are advanced enough for us to understand how to design a better society.

I share a similar story friend. Most Americans our age (Gen Z) are a directionless bunch who have never actually had to struggle before, they think that being unable to go to a concert or getting a text message ignored = depression. They really have no idea what hardship is like. That's why they dye their hair neon colors and then complain they get "discriminated" and "stereotyped" by them, get generic tattoos, complain about the most banal things, etc. they have no problems, so they must make them up themselves. Young Americans desperately need to gain some perspective.

I immigrated, dirt fucking poor, not a penny, near homeless for months, 5 people in a tiny apartment, no savings, etc. and we grinded it out, as a family. I've earned my spot in America, which most people my age will never understand nor know.

BREAKING NEWS: "United States Ebola Outbreak Linked to Exotic Meat Delivery Company Owned by Ex-Wall Streeter"

"Some things are believed because they are demonstrably true. But many other things are believed simply because they have been asserted repeatedly—and repetition has been accepted as a substitute for evidence." - Thomas Sowell

So I have a little bit of experience in the matter as I worked for a really good restaurant in my summers for some time.

In short: exotic meats have three problems usually:

1) really expensive (and not even because of supply & demand, many times its just that its a pain to take the meat out)

2) taste is nothing new (alligator for example tastes extremely similar to chicken). In general most exotic meats won’t taste new. Fruits and vegetables, on the other hand, its a different story

3) the meat is just really hard to work with. Exotic meats many times come from animals that move a lot, which means it will be extremely tough or may require a long process to even prep them.

From my point of view, the market will be niche and extremely hard to expand. If you wanted to do something food related still I believe importing exotic fruits or vegetables (even spices) at a competitive price may have much more potential

Mine are fairly similar.

Launch a SPAC.  SPACs today are mostly allocators, I actually am a hands on manager.  I obviously dont have the brand name to do this, but I am confident I could outperform 75% of SPACs that exist today by rolling up more boring businesses and managing them extremely well.  (I hope to actually do this via PE or private investments in the next 10 years, but SPAC mania makes me more hungry for it).

Somehow reform/complement education in my area.  I'm now in a small city where I could make a meaningful difference.  Maybe it's just free tutoring after school, but find some ways to improve outcomes of kids around here.

For some reason I've dreamed of having a house with an infinity pool and a view... couldn't tell you why but I imagine it all the time.

REALLY depends on your area.  If you like in a low COL city this is very attainable for accomplished professionals.  Obviously, LA, NYC and even Chicago make it more difficult than Omaha, Topeka, etc...

We're not extremely active, but considering upgrading our home - I looked at a house in my neighborhood last weekend ~$700k was 5,600 square feet with a great backyard with pool, built in grill, patio, tv, etc....  With taxes under $10k and rates this low $700k certainly is in the range of possibilities.  Monthly payments ~$3,500

yo me too, what kind of work do you do if you don't mind me asking? I've always wanted to get into this sort of stuff, but haven't had the time and ability to commit especially since I'm recently graduated and have just entered the workforce. Recently I've been trying to think of ways I could get started – I got even more inspired after taking trip to SE Asia a few years ago.

My goal is to grind it out in finance and save enough to support myself, then eventually transition into philanthropy FT.

We do small time education giving mostly in Thailand as my wife is Thai. Unfortunately, with little time it is harder to vet organizations, and so I spend a lot more time trying to find out the most efficient ways of using my money. Additionally, I don't want to come off as the imperial white man coming to save another country, so I've been looking to make my wife the face of any spending we do as much as possible. We have helped her extended family pay for their kids education in private schools and am hoping to see improvements in areas like STEM in the future. My wife's family are Swedish citizens and her brother is studying to go to uni in the US to study CS, and I like the initiative, and I hope to create something similar in kids as they grow because the mobility for people in SE Asia is so low.

My wife is very understandably strict on who we give our money too as her experience in Thailand and organization that front for improvements has always been poor. This is why I've been trying to work more directly and find ways to impact education directly myself.

I want to be able to make atleast a living off of making music. I used to make music in college with a childhood friend and in our last year we finally got to a point where it sounded professional and released one song, but he moved after college and i went to IB which took the time and frankly the passion for it away. Recently got back into it and remembering how fun it was though.

What kind of music? College student here just starting to get interested in music production

Not long ago, I used to think more about - making the world a better place with renewable energy, affordable healthcare, transparent corporate governance, better education, and whatnot. I would still be up for all of that. But, the more I think about it, the more I get to see that even though I am honest about the idea of achieving these, they do not push me beyond my normal performance. They do not inspire me to go beyond what I have already done. Maybe, someday they will. For today, there's a whole bunch of things around me that makes me push harder. This is about them.

  • Get published.
  • Become an institutional investor.
  • Have a 'no-fee' college under the name of someone I love, teaching programming, finance, philosophy, and some form of communication.
  • Have a family.
  • Support and accompany my loved ones in reaching the epitome of their potential.
  • Develop unwavered consistency/ discipline/ dependability.
  • Finish a triathlon.
  • Stand by my parents in their sunset years.
  • Have the ability to forgive, learn, and move on.

And, as cringeworthy as it may sound - becoming the best version of who I could've been and getting there before I lose that last breath.

If not himself, then he has naught
Not to say the things that he truly feels
And not the words of someone who kneels

And did it my way

Really great and honest response. Lots of people talk about being these great humanitarians, but do very little to actually help anyone. These ideas are things in our head that make us feel good about ourselves without really having to take much personal action. You've got a lot of personal insight to be able to admit that openly.  Really awesome.

I want my name to remembered for the next 1000 years, either for good things or bad. I'm leaning towards mass genocide right now, if anyone has any good ideas let me know please.

Uh, depends who u wanna genocide /s

If u wanna do something good;

  • Find the cure for cancer

  • End one of the world issues (World Hunger, World Peace, etc.)

  • Become a space financier like Elon Musk or shit

  • Discover immortality, rn, quantum based digital immortality seems like the way to go

  • etc.

I've witnessed a few of these within my clientele, and often times it comes from eschewing things you care about for things you feel you must take care of. it's why I will repeat my mantra - you should be doing the things today that when you're on your deathbed you'll wish you'd done more of. sure, you won't have hit every single goal, but nobody does.

I've also noticed that it comes when people don't take risks, either because they've cultivated a lifestyle that depends upon being a corporate drone with a high salary but low mobility/freedom, or because they've not saved well and therefore don't have the safety net. a few clients in particular who I think did this well avoided both of those pitfalls by living far below means, not keeping up with joneses, and investing throughout (even though they came from nothing). then, when they got exited at a high level because of political reasons, they weren't shellshocked, rather they used it as an opportunity to work at a startup, take a broader role within an organization where they could be creative, they took time off, they started their own company, but whatever the case may be, they arranged their lives in such a way that when the crises that often come to people who are 40-50 year old executives (kids don't wanna hang out with you, best years are behind you allegedly, career is peaking, etc.), they were ready.

Alright, going for gold on craziest goal here:

In the middle of a mass shootout by a Qanon believer, convince him that I am actually Q and that all the events leading up to this moment were destined for us to meet together so that I could finally relay to him the real mission he's tasked to do. He'll be skeptical and have a gun to my head but I'll displays such an eerie presence of calmness and confidence that he doesn't pull the trigger, thinking to himself that this might be the grand moment of purposeful importance he's been waiting his entire life. I tell him that once the police burst through the door and he's taken in, the police car he'll be escorted to will detour him away to safety where he'll be free to finish his real job: shoot up a Shakey's where the children slaves are hiding. In reality, the last part doesn't happen and he actually goes to jail and I get the pleasure of feeling a gun to my head while having an obscene belief it won't be fired.

Not that wild and crazy, but I want to live in an apartment with a massive shower with multiple rain showerheads, jets in the walls, seats, etc.  I love showers and have always lived in apartments so I've never had one of those huge fancy showers.

My craziest goal is to buy the Dallas Cowboys. No more signing RBs to big contracts.

I'm a huge car enthusiast, so I want to drive (or ride in) a lot of culturally and mechanically significant cars. I have a massive car bucket list and I've been slowly ticking them off. It helps being on the west coast because people have some serious cars out here. Probably the coolest I've seen was a convoy of a Regera, Chiron, and an Agera on Rodeo. Fastest I've ridden in was a Huracan Performante on the PCH. Really would love to experience a hypercar at some point. Like a P1, 918, LaFerrari or similar.

Run my own infra fund, and help build the infrastructure on my side of the world (APAC/SEA).

Own a news platform that delivered reliable reporting on business and current affairs.

Help fund successful solutions for dire medical problems (HIV, Alzheimer's, etc.).

Complete a second degree in astrophysics and combine general relativity and quantum mechanics.

Set up a fund that provides scholarships for kids in my neighbourhood.

Retire at 45ish with a couple million saved up. Maybe work an easy part time job to get out of the house, like working the day shift at a ski resort bar. Just go snowboarding and biking all the time, do some photography, reading. I really don't care for a lavish life and I have kids they're going to public schools.

Push to make medical donations (blood, organ, umbilical cord, platelets etc.) mandatory for everyone who is medically capable across the world. Thousands of people die each day waiting for organs or because blood transfusion supplies are low. Some countries are making progress (e.g. the UK recently went to an opt-out scheme for organ donation) whilst others need special attention (e.g. Cambodia, whose population has a particularly high rate of thalassaemia but where blood donation is a taboo topic). These types of donation are essentially effortless for the majority of people, both in life and death. This should be the norm - a world in which if you need an organ/blood/platelets you can get them without issue.

There's a PM in my group who's 29 and has only been working in the HF industry for 5 years. - talk to people about their family's history, geneaology, family tree, migration story

- meet those people in the country their family emigrated from

- give them the social and cultural context (both historical and present-day) of the country

      - also give them the cultural context of the specific area their ancestors are from

-  walk them through the towns/villages their ancestors are from, and bring the history to life through narrative and storytelling.
