Commodity Trading Prep Group - Graduate Programs / Majors

I wanted to start a group for people looking to break into commodity trading - either via the graduate programs at the merchants or your traditional supermajors (I went through one process at BP TDP myself so happy to share all the questions I was asked). This group can exchange networking tips / info but more specifically focus on technical concepts / skills / mock interviews to ace the technical assessments as some of this info is more opaque and not as open as your average IB guide nowadays. Places like Traf / Glencore are asking more and more technical Qs so looking to sharpen these myself and also help others with whatever I know already. If interested, PM me or comment below.

Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, starting a group focused on breaking into commodity trading is a fantastic idea, especially considering the technical nature and specific knowledge required for roles in this sector. Here are some ways you can structure the group and the types of resources and activities that could be beneficial based on what's been discussed in similar threads:

  1. Networking Tips and Information Exchange:

    • Create a repository of contacts: People who are currently in the industry or have gone through the graduate programs you're targeting. This could include alumni from your school, professionals you meet at industry events, or connections from LinkedIn.
    • Organize virtual meetups or Q&A sessions with professionals in the commodity trading space to gain insights and advice on breaking into the field.
  2. Technical Concepts and Skills Development:

    • Compile a list of essential technical concepts relevant to commodity trading. This could include topics like understanding the supply chain of various commodities, basics of futures and options, and the impact of geopolitical events on commodity prices.
    • Share resources such as books, articles, and courses from the WSO Academy that cover these topics. For example, the "Financial Modeling & Valuation 2-Day Bootcamp" could be a great way to sharpen valuation skills that are crucial in trading.
  3. Mock Interviews and Technical Assessments Preparation:

    • Organize mock interview sessions among group members focusing on technical questions commonly asked in commodity trading interviews. Sharing experiences, like the questions you were asked during your BP TDP process, can be incredibly valuable.
    • Develop a bank of technical questions and answers that members can use to practice. This can include both quantitative problems and market scenario analysis.
  4. Sharing Insider Insights:

    • Since firms like Trafigura and Glencore are leaning towards more technical questions, gathering insights from people who have interviewed at these companies or worked there can provide a competitive edge. This could be in the form of interview debriefs, technical question examples, or insights into the firms' cultures and what they look for in candidates.
  5. Utilize WSO Resources:

    • Encourage group members to leverage WSO resources such as the "Private Equity Interview Course" or the "Venture Capital Bootcamp" for those interested in the investment side of commodities. While not directly related to commodity trading, these courses can provide a solid foundation in assessing investments and understanding market dynamics.

Remember, the key to a successful prep group is active participation and contribution from all members. Sharing knowledge, resources, and experiences will not only help you but also assist others in the group to achieve their goals in breaking into commodity trading.

Hello,

Has any of you been added to a group? I don't want to hijack OP's thread, but if no group has been started I would be happy to take care of it as I have a bit of free time on my hands these days.

What do you think would be the best platform for the group ?

Thanks
