Marrying some one with Debt.
Ok, I don't plan on marrying some one with debt. But, suppose acurrent GF has ~50k in loans. And one does not currently have any debt to their name, no CC, no student loans, no car payments, nothing. Which has gotten me to wonder what if one happens to end up falling in
What is your opinions? What bracket of debt is an Auto No Thanks?.
10-20k?
21-40k?
Would their earning potential/major/school be a factor for you?
Any one ever have debt be the reason they didn't get engaged/married?
Upon looking up a Google search it seems this has been an issue for quiet a few actually, for example in this article:
http://ivyleaguedandunemployed.org/2011/04/15/student-loan-debt-keeps-a…
one user comments:"Sad but true, all my guy friends secretly admit that how much a girl has in student debt is a serious factor in long term relationships. I don’t doubt it goes both ways."
Eddie wrote up a good f you poor sobs post here:
//www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/sell-your-options-dearly-debt?page=1
But, some how none of the wise posters wrote anything about the thread title :(
Help WSO what is your opinion on this matter?
Inb4: fuck marriage mane models and bottles fo life

Haha. Oh wow. Its becoming a death trap these days.
Bro, you're not even gonna make her dad pay a dowry? A couple hundred hectares of dece' plough land and a pack of strong oxen more than makes up for a measly couple years' worth of student loans. Get your shit together. #LikeAGent
One of my friends is paying off his gf's credit card debt (over $40K, she figured she didn't have to pay so stopped making payments at some point earlier in life) as they prepare to tie the knot. He returned the engagement ring to make payments. She also has considerable amount of student loans.
To each their own I suppose.
Stupid is as stupid does.
He sounds like the ideal fiance/husband. I really hope this is all worthwhile and it works out for him.
My girlfriend has around 15k in student loans outstanding I think. If we were to get married, I wouldn't hesitate a second to help paying that off. Right now I still need to pay off student loans myself, but there's virtually nothing I wouldn't do for my girl.
15k is nothing. and those 130k for 80-100 hours salares are also nothing, nice car cost about 70k.
I'd probably look at a little more than just raw debt. If this is a CC bill maxed out because of shoes then yes, red flag. If the girl has a good job and a normal amount of student loan debt I wouldn't hold it against her.
While debt is a bad thing, lack of debt doesn't necessarily indicate anything other than being lucky and having parents who foot the bill.
Which can present a whole different set of problems, especially if you're not willing to carry the piss bucket.
HA I love it
Wait for the shake!
I would not marry someone who has accumulated serious credit card debt buying junk. Expect a lifetime of pain or a quick divorce if you do. In my opinion, it shows serious character flaws.
My fiance has student loan debt but for supporting herself through most of med school, it's incredibly low (thank you scholarships). Plus, she doesn't have an insane amount of clothes or shoes like many other women I had dated previously...basically because she couldn't shop as a like some of her friends that had $.
Point is, I don't even think twice IF the girl went into debt investing in her own education and didn't just build it up to crazy levels. That is a good sign because it shows some understanding of finances and control (rare).
this was mentioned a couple times, but what is a "normal amount of student loan debt"
Here's another twist on the student debt angle. What if she has student loans from getting her MRS. and doesn't plan to pay it off on her own after marriage. I think this is more of blastoise's concern by using a raw debt figure.
I didn't notice that this was posted by blastoise, my mentor/lover.
I agree w/ SirTradesaLot's statement that not all debt is equal; but what if she had $200K in debt from med school and had trouble paying it back ?
I suggest none of the people, with the exception of Patrick and Trade, get married. If you are calculating debt load, potential income, etc when it comes to a relationship that is supposed to last a life time you are better off not doing it all together.
People lose their jobs, get pregnant, have to move for work, etc. Are you going to make your wife pay 50% of the milk? Man, for a site full of "ballers" people are arguing like broke as mofo's.
Don't marry a woman with $50K in Nordstorms charges. Don't marry someone with $200K of UG debt for an arts degree and no desire to work. Do marry someone with debt who is a doctor. Do marry someone who came from a modest family, took out some debt for school and is working.
I'd suggest the bulk of posters in this thread worry about getting a GF first and foremost and then start thinking about marriage.
Boom goes the dynamite.
G/f has 20k in loans, I have 60k. Sucks to pay for ugrad yourself through loans and jobs. Neither of us look at each other less because of it, we wouldn't be dating if it was an important concern. She would get rid of me :)
Gold
This.
The post is such a clinical discussion about relationships that it makes me fear for humanity. Bunch of wannabes going on about models and bottles but all freaked out if someone is carrying a bit of a debt load for one reason or another. Models and bottles cost money too kids.... you'll find out when you get there.
Yep. This
She can have 100k of debt as long as she makes enough, because I'm not paying for that shit.
And who says chivalry is dead?
Bro all I care about is money - plus I never pay on the first date. Second date at McDonalds because I want to test her personality and not because I'm cheap. I'll buy the dollar menu nuggets but make her buy the large drink.
Patrick,
Threads of this particular sort seem to be the norm in the monkey around forum these days. Of course, it can be argued that no one has to read them or comment on them.
Threads in this forum seem to follow a pattern:
Blastoise trolls; a shit load of kids bite. Ant comes in and tells everyone off, Eddie weighs in with some advice based on empirical evidence. It finally snow balls into some 19 year old arguing and with an Associate...
Don't get me wrong, this place is a fantastic resource for the kids trying to break into the industry. It's really nice to read their stories, and help these hard working guys hustle. But the monkey around forum is getting a little stale for the older crowd.
Nobody likes a party pooper...
It's okay, usually normal people can't tell - you differentiate between boy and man by the number of pokeballs they can carry at once. Men can carry more than six, just look at the belt next time.
I sometimes try and take them to Wendy's for the spicy chicken nuggets, but that's only if I felt good about them on the first date. Nice call on Pret, since they have the deal with Target; I usually ball out and take her there if she passes the nugget test.
captainradio, I think you meant to say snowballs, not snow balls.
If you want to kill the website, follow this posters advice.
The amount of douchness in this post is too damn high.
What if youre dating a girl whos from a family where they buy her shit all the time and she has 200+ pairs of shoes that are like, 500 bucks a pair, and youre worried she accumulates/likes shit too much to stop getting so much shit?
Everything is relative guys, you cant just analyze it in terms of the amount of debt. Of course really high debt would be a red flag but normal amount of debt should be analyzed jointly with potential job, reason for debt. I think those three can give you an accurate estimation of your future, whether she just went crazy with the card or is school debt. Under normal circumstances and assuming I would have a good job I wouldnt mind helping her paying.
I would marry a women with debt so long as she bears me strong warrior sons. If she were to fail, I would slay her.
Too much Game of Thrones eh?
if it flies, floats, or fcks, RENT!! any good banker should know this.
This is dumb
You should be making enough to be able to cover her debt if she's a keeper. Also, hopefully she's making at least something (models get paid too, hah) and even better if she has family money.
Have fun finding many potential partners without some form of student loan debt these days.
Marriage is for LIFE. There's a very good chance--a near certainty--that you're going to go through some shit. One of you will lose your job (maybe for a long time), suffer from some sort of illness, and god only knows what else. And that's not even talking about kids. If you're trying to figure out whether it's worth it to marry a girl based on some student loan debt, then you probably shouldn't get married.
As TNA said so well above, all debt isn't equal. 20k in CC debt from buying clothes is BAD BAD BAD. But even 6 figures from undergrad + grad school shouldn't be a deal breaker, assuming she has a good head on her shoulders and has decent job prospects.
This has to be one of the worst questions I've seen.
It's actually a decent question though now that students are taking out 80k+ student loans that are unlikely to be discharged via bankruptcy
Debt itself shouldn't be your concern though. It's the ability of your future wife to service the debt, meaning her credit quality.
Same as any business. One that is levered up isn't necessarily worse than one with 20% debt.
Slayers gonna slay. EV and Lower, no ring
If she's got more than 60k, a few important considerations.
i) will she stay within a respectable weight range ii) will she still go down in hur thirties
Been there, done that. Agree with posters above that it's entirely dependent on type of debt and attitude towards it. Even huge student loans can be manageable with programs like IBR, etc, as long as the borrower isn't continuing to spend irresponsibly on things other than school. To me, the marriage is way more important than a meaningful-but-not-catastrophic dent in our financial situation, even if it lasts far into the future.
be a baller, make a billion, what's 50k to that?
This is dumb. I wouldn't marry someone that was lazy/lacked ambition, or drive. If they have good debt that's fine. Otherwise I'd go no further than a drunken smush
My fiancée owes $300k, maybe I shouldn't get married?
Ya think??? Fuck me running.
LOL. Exactly.
What is the debt breakdown in that $300k?
