What Do You Look Forward To Short-Term?
What do you look forward to at the end of the day? I have a lot to look forward to in the medium and long term, so I'm very motivated to get work done. But I'm looking for some ways to unwind / something to look forward to at the end of a typical Wedneaday. Otherwise, I feel like all I do is work and sleep.
Drinking is a great one obviously, but not sustainable given my health, longevity, mental clarity, and productivity goals. I'm also doing a thing where I don't allow myself to drink as a coping mechanism - only for fun. I've been smoking weed on and off for like 12 years and usually smoke in the evenings if I have time. But I feel like it's making me a little less sharp the following mornings. And it also makes me overeat, which normally isn't a problem for me.
So I think I might make weed a weekend thing. I'd like to find some way to unwind in the evening that's healthy and sustainable. I like reading and all that shit, but honestly, I'm just looking for a way to shut my brain off a bit. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure if this is in your wheelhouse, but I typically save going to the gym for after work for this very reason (coupled with the fact that my gym is swamped between 6 and 7.) It's a fantastic way to blow off steam and doesn't require any kind of mental stimulation. I actually find that I have my most creative or insightful ideas while running prior to lifting.
If that's not your thing, a double of Macallan is my next go to on a Wednesday.
A workout would have the opposite affect for me for sure. I like to get a hard workout in early before I do most of my other stuff. Everything you do that day feels easier once you've already collapsed from exhaustion.
Maybe try an easier evening workout, I went to hot yoga with my lil sis once and it was pretty cash. Heat relaxes, stretching is good and I never do that shit to the point where it hurts my gains, and there's a lot of focus on being present and forgetting all the chaos in life.
There's a bunch of different types, the one I did was full on cardio (mountain climbers and air squats holding weights) and the heat made me pass out three times in the hour, but it doesn't get you hyped like a morning run does. There's also ones more focused on stretching or meditation as well.
Try a netflix show, I like to relax to an episode as I eat dinner. For sustainable, there's a bunch of documentary-like shows that aren't just a waste of time, but don't require tons of focus.
Watch the sunset- I make a little ginger tea and just try to watch the sun set for 30min. Hard to fit into the schedule a lot, but it makes me hustle when I normally start getting distracted at 3-4pm.
I said hot yoga in an earlier reply.
Group sports- I do volleyball thursdays with a cool group, and spearfishing or surfing wednesdays with a bud or two when I'm free. There's usually indoor soccer, tennis, ultimate frisbee, etc no matter where you are, but if your city has nature it's better to utilize it. Again, hard to leave work for that hour or so, but #worth.
playstation, low lights/music/writing, low lights/music/hanging with people, online poker, podcasts, yoga (there are late night classes that are bomb), organized sports, executive workout (swim, steam, sauana, hot tub, shower)
oh and s3x
What online poker site are you playing on? Or are you not located in the US?
I know a lot of dudes "grow out" of video games, but I have yet to find another way, short of binge-watching something on HBO or Netflix, to do a fun, brainless activity. The new God of War game is one of those games that defines a video game generation and has a surprisingly deep and in-depth narrative on top of killing shit - definitely worth a look.
I agree that a lot of times my brain hurts way too much to read after work and I'm too tired to work out - those have to take place in the morning to be anywhere near effective.
Shooting hookers and driving aimlessly in GTA is a good way to unwind too.
Anxiously awaiting Red Dead Redemption 2 to come out. I'm going to shut off the social life for a week for that.
Was going to say video games, just played through the new FarCry game which was pretty rad. Gonna 100% that and then get GOW.
Currently playing FC5, it's awesome.
Did you play Far Cry Primal? I liked the first half or so a lot. Then it got easy and repetitive.
So consensus seems to be workouts and video games mostly. I already work out and hit the sauna every day. I do have an Xbox and play it super sporadically. I was playing Witcher 3 for a while but got stuck on a boss... CRE That God of War game looks awesome. I might buy a Playstation just for that and Ratchet & Clank (for nostalgia reasons).
Going to the driving range for some swing therapy
Goddamn your username made me lol
Aside from the workouts and video games, going to the shooting range is a great way to blow off some steam. Unfortunately, it's easy to blow through your money too :(
Try archery. It's a lot cheaper! (and a more satisfying discipline imo)
I've been sacrificing short-term hedonism for life-long dreams for quite sometime now. I have trouble living in the present and spend most of my time building for the future. I know this is not the ideal state, but general shit is going in the right direction and I'm happy living like this for the time being. Shutting off my brain is a massive bitch. The only method that is not self-destructive that I've found is working out to the point of physical exhaustion.
I do take two weeks of my vacation every year for exotic travel. I golf almost every weekend on Sunday mornings. Sex is pretty cool.
And actually as of late, I've REALLY enjoyed just shutting off my phone on a weekend day and just falling off the face of the earth to just hang by myself. Music, reading, studies, documentaries and good food, all without any interruptions from the outside world fucking with my zone. 'tis a beautiful thing.
i have to get outside, if i have the energy basketball pick up games are my go to, otherwise a walk/run by the beach
Yeah the beach is great. Day or night.
Exercising does it for me
Muay Thai sparring is very fun/challenging for me.
I just got into this - do the minor nagging injuries/soreness get better as you go? Love the sport, but the joint pain is real.
I typically don't get sore from the classes. Most days are 2.5 hours (drilling/pads/sparring). You get used to everything. Well, mostly everything. The only thing I catch these days is if the top of my foot hits an elbow or hard leg checks or eating low leg kicks.
Even eating low leg kicks, my legs have adjusted to the abuse. The only joint pain I get in Muay Thai is when I'm working elbows on bag work for 30 mins in a row or something. My shoulders start to get real tight.
I'm not sure what you're working on, but there could be some growing pains when you start out like blowing out your hip flexors from kicking hundreds of times (depending on your instructor) or some other things. In general though, I've found Muay Thai to be a much safer sport (injury wise) than Jiu Jitsu. I've gotten my back and neck tweaked out a few times in Jiu Jitsu as well as torn rib cartilage, fractured ribs. I thought I got cauliflower ear from it too, but the swelling slowly went away. Muay Thai is mainly skin injuries and bone bruises, which isn't that big of a deal.
Which joint hurts specifically?
I wish the new Monkey Shit elaboration system would allow me to select "gay" as the reason for throwing MS at you. So instead I'll just put "low quality", but you know what the real reason is.
Muay Thai striking has proven to be the most effective in the world.
Is Buakaw 'gay' too? What do you think Muay Thai is exactly?

I street dance in my spare time (gets the creativity and workout boxes checked off) and I'm gearing up for a few competitions. I know a lot of friends who love to play an instrument like guitar or whatever and it seems even more fulfilling when they have a band together.
Fishing, I used to live in the south on the water and would go out almost every day. Nothing like being on the water with a beer or two. Since moving Im starting to get into Fly Fishing, its been awesome, something special about being knee deep waving a fishing rod over your head.
Have you ever tried deepwater fishing? If not, I would recommend you try it. Its a different experience from fishing on a lake, and not quite as serene, but it's pretty exciting and IMO pretty fun. However, it's not readily feasible to go deepwater fishing every day, so it's more of like a weekend excursion. I highly recommend you try it sometimes :)
I run and play football with some guys from my undergrad + other finance guys 1-2 times a week. Nothing beats a good workout and some inside information on a Tuesday night!
Working out, documentaries, learning an instrument, video games, reading.

Pick up a new instrument and take lessons (or dedicate an hour to practice). I've been playing guitar for years and will pick it up and mindlessly play shit, but at this point, I'd opt to take outside lessons for a new instrument because it gets me out, I can work the brain and learn something new, and it's improving a talent. And so on.
lifting 4 four times a week (2 times during the work week) and PUBG
This is actually quite interesting. What I look forward to after a long day is coming home to my girlfriend. There will typically be food in the fridge, and then we just chill with a couple of episodes of a tv show.
When I need to relax and de-stress I go for a run. It works great for me, and I always do it if I have to make an important decision. It's by far the best environment for me to think in.
It's funny to see how different people are with these sorts of things. I don't think you can underestimate how important it is though.
Trying meditating for 10 minutes a day to start through an app called Headspace. Gives me great clarity.
You need an app to meditate?
I was going to suggest this. I've been noticeably less stressed after meditating for a few weeks and I've been sleeping better too.
"Calm" is another good app.
Flying domestically is surprisingly cheap if you plan right - I like visiting close friends / family in other cities.
not a huge gamer but if I am sick of work, working on a side biz, or don't want to travel I'll often pull up surviv.io and play that.
If I have extra cash laying around I'll go trade crypto. Or if I hate my job or think my tenure at my current co might be terminated send out some job apps.
Browsing WSO. I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but I like to browse various forums, including Wall Street Oasis in my downtime to relax. I also enjoy watching documentaries and going on a run, biking, or getting some lifting in (if I'm in the mood). Watching a documentary before going to bed is a great way to end the day IMO.
