Incoming Barclays FT 2020
Hi All,
While the near-term focus has been primarily summer analyst programs, I wanted to pull a thread together for all incoming FT Barclays analysts and associates (all offices). The original start-date for Barclays Americas was training in NYC starting July 22. Needless to say, that is unlikely to proceed as originally planned!
Like many of you, I haven't have received any official communication since "we're in this together" on 20-Mar-2020. I was hoping we could use this thread to share any updates (official or unofficial), discuss group placements, and connect.
Hope you're staying safe and well during these uncertain times!
Thanks for doing this thread, great idea! London Training is supposed to start July 22 as well and so far have not heard otherwise. For the February joiners in London they ended up doing the training online from early march onwards, so I'd expect something similar to happen in July. Looking forward to hearing from anyone else with other info.
So they already had a virtual training program in the spring? Then they can easily use it for us i guess?
Anyone reached out to HR or anyone from Barclays after the email??
Nobody has inside info bro, all of you will get the update email at the same time
also did anyone receive anything about the SIE exam and prep?
what is barclays doing?? even the MMs and boutiques gave updates to their SA class but nothing from Barclays? I am FT but I know they will update the SAs first thats why I am curious about the SA update
no update for SA
i hope they know all the other BBs updated their SAs idk if we should be worried at this point
it is pretty insensitive of them to not give us any update whatsoever
Has anyone tried reaching out to the HR?
Thanks for posting thread. When are internships supposed to start? I'm incoming FT, but thinking something needs to be sent out soon, especially if interns start in like a month.
they never gave an official date but June 1 was the original unofficial start
Agreed. My guess would be they determine the SA program as a first priority, and the FT program will follow. FT is scheduled to start later and has more flexibility, so I see it as less urgent. Furthermore, I'm sure the decisions they make for SA (i.e. delays, virtual/in-person) will cascade to FT, so this must be determined first.
I definitely feel for the SAs, Having no direction on the path forward for the program less than 6 weeks out is tough, albeit I think we can all agree the bank has more urgent matters on their hands. I am hopeful the formal update comes in the next week or so. I wouldn't be surprised if the FT update is sent at the same time, or soon after.
My two cents, anyways.
Agreed
I touched base with HR, and there are currently no changes to incoming grads (FT hires) yet. They are trying to figure out how to modify the summer internship program first which may be a delayed start. They're aiming to send out communication in next 1-2 weeks. Thanks for everyone's patience.
thanks for the update
Thanks for the update! We really appreciate it.
should I get housing yet
Thank you!! do u think there is a possibility of rescinding offers or are they only considering to change the structure of FT training (virtual vs in NY)?
Thanks for the update. Do you know what the situation with incoming SAs is ?
In the Barclays summer intern thread here:
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/barclays-2020-summer-intern?
Incoming FT not at Barclays. Hope you guys hear something soon. It’s brutal that nothing has been sent out yet.
BB? Did u hear anything for ur FT program? I feel like none of the BBs updated FTs yet
Not a BB. Industry specific boutique in NYC. HR has been in constant communication with us since last month. Honestly has handled the situation pretty well. They are basically doing what everyone else is doing and feeling out things and trying to decide what the plan is. Ultimately nothing has changed as of now but I can’t imagine we have in person training so I’m anticipating an email in the next few weeks with details.
I have friends going to BBs. Same boat as well where things are “on as planned” as of now but most likely because they haven’t decided on an alternative yet.
Email went out today to incoming London FT about starting background checks.
No changes to start date as of yet, guessing that training will be online though.
when is the start date for london?
July 22
Thanks for the update! Let us know if you hear anything more. We're also scheduled for July 22, but no update on my end regarding background checks yet.
did u intern at barclays last summer? do they do background check again
No this is for new FTs, not returners
Does anyone know if they do background check again for returning FTs? any idea when they will start for nyc
Side question here, do your contracts specify an end date / program duration? Kinda weird cuz for other banks they usually specify how long the program lasts..
I’m pretty sure the graduate programmes at Barclays are full time permanent positions where you don’t run the risk of being automatically kicked out after a year or two like at some other banks
Anyone heard about the SIE exam or prep?
No but i heard some BBs have June 1 deadline to take the SIE. I hope they won't tell us in the last minute
I thought I remember them telling us NOT to take it before we arrive for training. But haven't heard anything since
I emailed one of the program managers mentioned in the email, asking about the SIE/series exams. I asked if they would consider sending us the training materials in advance. Not to be a hardo, but I'd rather study for the exam now than in June/July. They didn't answer my email, nor did I follow up.
anyone who interned this past summer... what was your background check like?
Nothing too detailed. But they reach out to your supervisors from previous internships and that took a while for me.
So in the bg check process, you have to provide the contact information to bg verifier right? Or they just reach out to previous employers by themselves?
Anyone got anything for onboarding (background check.. etc.)? Do they do background check for returning FTs ?
I would imagine we'd all receive the same emails synchronously, with the exception of specific tasks for lateral hires (i.e., background checks). Haven't received anything.
Any FT NYC receive any update now that interns have got their emails?
Nope, not yet. Anyone?
Anyone received an update yet in regards to start date, SIE exam prep, placement, etc?
Anyone heard anything from BarCap yet for FT? All I've received is an email from HR in mid-March telling me to cancel travel plans...
They sent the update to SAs today. We'll probably get it next week or so?
I don't think that's what they said in the email this sounds a bit misleading lol isn't it recommend to make flexible accommodation plans that can be revised/cancelled
Yeah - I wasn't trying to mislead. I was just making sure that was the last email and I haven't missed any correspondence.
Anyone got anything about start dates? they said we were supposed to get something in March intitially.
Haven't received anything yet either. I know interns got an update last week so hopefully we get an email soon.
Nothing yet. However, the trend across all BB FT programs has been a lack of formal communication, with some banks expected to provide updates in mid-May. I get the impression Barclays (among others) is waiting to see how the COVID-19 situation evolves before committing to any impacts to FT start dates or training formats. Compared to summer interns, ultimately we are a more flexible group.
At this point I would assume business as usual, until told otherwise. Of course, I expect training is all but guaranteed to be virtual, however I am unsure if they will pursue a delayed start. As mentioned above, I agree that now the SA program has been resolved, hopefully we can expect to hear from HR soon. Not sure if anyone else has had separate conversations with HR or other internal sources?
Got an email from HR this afternoon saying things are unchanged as of now.
got the same email
Same! Received from HR this afternoon. I assume this went to many incoming graduates.
Same but it doesn't mention the start date. Any idea when the official start date was?
I had reached out and asked a while ago (like Feb.) before the world went off the rails. And HR told me likely to be the second or third Monday in July. They probably won't bother to get specific with a start date at this point until they can be certain.
Anybody got info on when the background check will start? Saw many of you guys getting an update on the comments above, but nothing so far for me in HK..
Sorry for not giving more info - I assumed the e-mail went to all incoming graduates, but perhaps it just went to the Americas offices. The e-mail outlined the two training companies which will be used for general Barclays training, and also the SIE, Series 79, and Series 63 exam prep. The general training also has pre-work curriculum we have to complete to ensure we hit the ground running once training starts.
As mentioned in the comments above, HR also stated the program remains unchanged at this point, but is under review. This means decisions on start date delays or virtual delivery haven't been finalized. As such, nothing official on start dates or background checks at this point. Hope this helps.
Ye it definintely helps! I guess it's cuz the exams to be taken are different over here. Thanks mate!
Has anyone finished the TTS Accounting Pre-Test Assessment?
If so, can you comment on the type and difficulty of the questions? We're supposed to complete the pre-assessment before reading the "SmartBook", but I wondered if anyone opted to look through this book before doing the test as a quick refresher.
Cheers!
it's for your own learning, so you should take it to identify your weaknesses and study accordingly. it's a mix of conceptual and math questions.
Thanks - I understand the intent of the assessment, just wanted to know what to expect. Is it all accounting or some valuation questions too?
are u nyc? I didn't receive anything
Yes NYC IB. We got the email last week.
Anyone heard anything after the last email? Anything about the onboarding process (background check, drug test etc.)?
nope....
anyone get any updates? Heard Citi's was pushed back to early August. Unclear if they are getting paid from original state date...
probably not - and we'd be the only BB to not do so
To not do what - delay FT start?
if we're lucky we'll get an update by end of week. big "if."
Obviously no updates yet from the HR Team (those have been sent to all incoming employees), but does anyone have any inside info on what the plan is for training and start dates? The "training is unchanged as of now" messaging is nothing but a deferral of making a decision - clearly there will not be an in-person training program in NYC by late July... At this point I assume a completely virtual training program, but I am more curious about whether or not the start date will be pushed back. I was originally scheduled to be in NYC on July 22 for training. Will this date be kept? Pushed into August? September? As I'm sure you all agree, this information would be very useful!
I hope they won't push it to September
y'all haven't gotten any guidance on dates for completing the SIE or series exams yet right?
No, I believe the last email we received told us not to take the exam prior to arriving and that we would be covering exam material during training. However, I have received my three prep books and online resource access to begin studying ahead of that.
Going FT into IB barclays in NY here - latest thing I've heard from current employees is that we will not be going into the office in-person until at least september or october
Any word on timelines for starting training, or hitting the desk (even if its WFH)? I am not expecting any banks or businesses to be in downtown office towers before Sept/Oct - not just a Barclays thing.
In London they plan for us to hit the desks on Sept 14, although this was decided before Barclays communicated to employees about WFH until end of Sept. Also, I received my Hireright invite last night for anyone who hasn't received it yet (London start date is same as NYC).
but they said S&T might go in sooner? hope they won't push our start dates till then
Just received an e-mail - FT Training confirmed as virtual, and a placeholder start date of July 30th. However, HR was clear to emphasize that this start date is not confirmed, and we will receive the official confirmed start date in the coming weeks. Not overly useful in terms of planning, but hey I guess it's an update! I would guess the start date won't be any earlier than July 30th, but perhaps they are suggesting it's possible to see a slight delay.
If they would delay until october, I guess they would mention it?? I hope they won't delay until Sept/October
I agree - I think if the delay was significant (i.e. September or October), the tone of the e-mail would be quite different. My guess is that the actual start date will be July 30th +/- 2 weeks...but that's just based on reading through the lines and gut feel only!
Is this NY or LDN?
nyc
wil there be a stipend if delayed?
Honestly the email was pretty vague. No mention of a potential delay, and no mention of a stipend. I'm just speculating that using July 30th as a placeholder suggests the training program won't start any earlier than this date, but potentially later. My $0.02.
Is there a drug test for the background check?
We didn't have it last summer and seems like the same process. It sucks that we have to redo everything again
out of curiosity, how long did your background check take to clear last year?
kinda worried over here, so the hr said the proposed start date is 13/7 for me (HK), but still received nth about background checks or first day guidelines so far.....
they would either push the start date or expedite the onboarding process
alrighty. Not sure if this is only for HK, but there's also an approximately 5k usd bonus payable within 60 days upon signing the contract. however it seems that it won't be paid in time on their side. I guess it's only payable when the background check is done then..
US background check (cisive) doesn't ask for other investments like stocks on robinhood? do u know how we are supposed to disclose them
The background check only inquired about whether you were a partner or major shareholder in a firm - nothing on personal minor investments. I am sure specific direction on how to manage your trading accounts (and the rules that come with this working as a bank insider) will come in future discussions.
Compliance will ask you to attest to your brokerage account holdings/closings later.
Has anyone not received an email from Cisive yet?
yeah i received it the day after the onboarding email.check ur spam
how long is the training? if we start on july 30th, when will be the first day at the desk?
last year MBA associates started July 22nd and hit the desk after Labor Day. this included 3.5 weeks of training the street and roughly 2.5 weeks for exams. the analyst started 2 weeks earlier so TTS was staggered for both analysts associates
when you say 2.5 weeks for the exams, do you mean the exam training or do they give you a self-study period of 2.5 weeks?
the Barclays career page says 7 weeks ... "How you'll develop... you’ll spend seven weeks learning what you need to know to help you make a strong start"
That was the old in-person program in NYC - I wouldn't assume it will be identical given the virtual format. Hopefully they confirm soon!
any updates?
Did everyone see the new email? Mentions placement day is September 8th?? How did they just push the placement day from July 16 to September 8th lol.
I think September 8th would be our first day on the desk with our teams. (Virtual or in person)
No, just clarified with HR... Sept 9th is when the technical training begins (following the series training). So, actually on the desk would be a few weeks later.
so your training starts in september?
Forgot we also have TTS training as well. I would assume that is for 1-2 weeks following the Knopman training?
Has anybody heard anything from Hireright yet?
Cisive is doing the background checks, and I got the email from the same day they sent out the onboarding task list
I received the Cisive email the same day too. I submitted all of the forms but have not heard anything back yet.
what about Hireright for those in London?
Does anoyone know if we need to do fingerprinting? My task list did not specify.
My list specifically says "Schedule appointment and complete fingerprinting by July 24th." But, if yours doesn't say that, and you're doing banking, then you should probably reach out to clarify with HR.
Thanks. Were you a SA last summer?
unrelated, but could anyone share the latest email format for analysts at Barclays? Trying to network but all the emails are bouncing
[email protected] [email protected]
neither of these worked
it's [email protected]
maybe they're using your contact's legal name (e.g. William not Will) in the email or something
Anyone got anything from cisive?
I got a notification couple weeks back about a copy of the completed background check but that’s about it. When I check the cisive website it says all tasks completed so I guess that’s it?
yeah it says all tasks completed until they ask for a new form. What does the confirmation email say? How long did it take you then? I didn't get a completed background check email last summer too (it was cisive again)
did you see the i9 issue and suspended interns? anyone knows exactly why? we don't want to make the same mistake lol
Literally have not heard a word about this, would love more specifics.
Source: I work there.
Assuming it is a minor issue due to missed information or not submitting proper identification.
yeah but happened to many interns not 1-2 so it should be important for incoming FT paperwork too
Did you all send your I9s? Am I late lol
Would not be surprised if we got an update email from HR soon about the I-9 given what happened
Does anyone know if we will be getting any equipment (i.e. laptop/monitor) or a technology stipend? Heard from a current analyst that HR may be providing laptops in the fall so they recommended holding off from buying a laptop if thats the case.
For the interns I believe they provided laptops if you didn't have ability to access a device that could support the virtual workstation
OK I think I figured it out as I was filling out my I-9. In the second section, you are allowed to put anyone but yourself as agent. but the guideline says that employer of the agent should be written as Barclays even tho this person doesn't work there. So, I guess the problem is USCIS cannot verify the agent works at Barclays

Hi all, current intern here.
Quick question: what is the policy for return offers? How long do we have to decide?
I’m fairly certain finance isn’t for me so far since it’s not exciting, so I want to interview more broadly. If we’re only given the two weeks after the last day, I don’t think I can do that so would either have to turn it down or renege. I haven’t gotten an offer yet, but would like to know what I might get myself into ahead of time.
Thanks!
Get the job first. It sounds like you've made up your mind already.
Has anyone received confirmation about I-9 forms? Not sure if we are expected to hear anything, but wanted to check with you all.
