JP Morgan Launching Leaders. How to prepare for interview?
Background: Economics major at Howard University
I got selected for a phone interview (guessing first round) with JP Morgan for their Launching Leaders Scholarship Program.
http://careers.JPMorgan.com/student/jpmorgan/careers/launchingleaders/ug/scholarship
Award winners receive a (5k or 7.5k) scholarship and a summer internship.
Any advice on how to better prepare for the interview. Anyone interview for JP Morgan before? So far, I've purchased BIWS Excel & Financial Modeling Fundamentals. Almost halfway through with that.
Interview is in a week. I would greatly appreciate any advice.
see my post in: //www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/jp-morgan-launching-leaders-internship
Yes, first round was actually two phone interview's for me followed by in person superday where I had 4 back to back interviews.
Phone interviews weren't really technical. Was asked about current market conditions, why finance, why banking, etc. The technical questions were along the lines of "how would you value a company?" They look for the usual precedent transactions, comparables, DCF, etc.
Final round superday was more of the same. Asked about the market, why JPM, etc. Technical questions were more or less the same. For me I was coming from a non-finance technical background (CS/MATH) so a lot of mine was behavioral and I interviewed with one CS guy who grilled me on CS concepts.
hope this helps.
Is this the post you're referring to. If so, thanks. CS is Computer Science, correct? Do you mind if I contact you in the future?
Yes that is the post I was referring to. Feel free to message me if you have anymore questions.
How come Asians don't qualify for this program? WTF? I thought they were a minority too. Actually hispanics shouldn't even be considered a minority anymore since they'll outnumber whites in less than 10 years.
The same reasons that Asians aren't typically viewed in the same light as Black, Hispanics, etc. when it comes to affirmative action & college admissions....
Regardless, I don't want to get into this debate. My advice to you is to apply anyway because there was definitely a couple of Asian kids in my Launching Leaders class.
because asians are a majority in those programs already and hispanics are a majority overall but when it comes to corporate structures they are an extreme minority.
I did a similar diversity program this past summer as well and I can also attest to "apply anyway."
I had a phone interview a few weeks ago and had my superday yesterday, December 2nd. Did anyone else go through the superday yet or hear back on their final offer?
My friend told me that on Wall Street indians/asians are the 2nd highest population.
I think its White, Indian, Asian, Black, Native American, Hispanic
I'm waiting as well tennisman.
You had it on Friday or on Thursday?
Thursday with the sophomores. I was told we'd hear back Monday ish.
Oh Thursday must of have been only sophomores. I'm a junior. What did you think?
Yeah it was only sophomores. We were told it'd be less technical but the interviewers were from all different divisions, some didn't seem to really have a clue about what the program was, and treated it as if it were a regular junior SA interview for their own respective divisions. I thought I did really well, had some luck with my interviewers, while others reported a less positive experience. But we shall see.
I also interviewed on Friday. I haven't heard back. Have you heard back yet?
good luck
Still waiting also. They weren't 100% when they told me Monday so hopefully we're still in the running. Either way, I've been a nervous wreck.
Lol I haven't heard back either, but I did receive a cookie in the mail, with a note saying thanks for coming to the superday.
Not sure how to interpret it. It might be like, "oh here's a cookie to help alleviate the rejection you'll be getting tomorrow."
I interviewed on Friday also.. still no response.. hopefully today
I interviewed on Friday also.. still no response.. hopefully today
Just got the call 2 hrs ago.. got accepted!
Same here man, about an hour ago! Congrats!
Lol, well I guess I didn't get accepted...
sucks because I thought my interviews went really well
Did the people who got an offer apply to IB or S&T?
IB
IB as well.
How long after you submitted your essays did it take for you to hear back about a phone interview?
It says by November 16th, but I'm curious if they wait until that time.
Just went back through my emails. I got an email towards the end of October saying thanks for my application and that I'd be reached out to over phone or email by the 7th of November. Probably had my phone interview around then then received an email invitation on the 16th for a superday on Dec. 1st.
Good to know thanks for the reply. This hurricane probably pushed the date into early november.
Okay, just had my phone interview. Do you recall how long after that it took to hear back whether I will be invited to the superday?
Thanks.
hey jo32015p, do you mind sharing the email of the recruiter who contacted you? want to apply for this next year. thanks.
No recruiters, i am at a non-target. I just signed up online.
Still haven't heard back yet and the superday is the week after next...
Are they supposed to respond even if they don't select me? I have not heard anything at all since I submitted my application..
Idk I haven't heard anything since the phone interview Last week.... Going to call on Monday.
I haven't heard anything since my phone interview last week as well Jo please let us know what they say when you contact them Monday. Thank you
Okay I will. What day was yours and what div was your interviewer? Mine was last Monday , and by a leveraged finance banker .
Mine was last Wednesday and was also a leveraged finance banker
I'll be at the superday on the 7th of December. Is anyone else going?
I'm at the hotel now. Interview tomorrow!
JP Morgan Launching Leaders super day Questions (Originally Posted: 11/30/2013)
Hi everyone,
I was invited to the super day at JPM for the launching leaders program, and I am getting so nervous! I am a sophomore with no finance experience, so this will be my first super day! If anyone has done the program before, or just has general advice for getting the internship, I would really appreciate your help. I also had a few specific questions:
How many other applicants will there be at the super day and how many will JPM take? Any advice for the "networking lunch" before the interviews? Was anyone else offered a mock interview from an associate at JPM to help them prepare for the real deal? If I do badly during the mock interview, will that affect my chances of getting the internship? Is the internship paid or is the $5k scholarship (for sophomores) the payment for the internship?
Thank you! :-)
most people don't prepare enough. if you do I guarantee you won't have to worry how about how many are they taking/how many applying.
Buy the WSO/M&I guides. Know the accounting, valuation, and fit questions COLD~ around 200 questions for the common ones. Cold as in if I asked you right now you would be able to give me a fluent and concise answer without fumbling around. Do this, and I guarantee you'll get it.
Most people don't do the above, they think they can "wing it". investment bankers are trained bullshitters, they will catch you if you don't know it cold. The networking lunch, just be yourself and look around wso for good questions to ask investment bankers-tons of them. Just don't do badly in the mock interview period. treat it like a real one.
I'm also preparing for this interview and very nervous as well. Junior with no finance experience! I'm actually an MIS major, but I'm studying accounting and valuation questions.
