Custom suits and shirts

I am in the process of rebuffing my wardrobe after having started B-School and was looking into getting some suits and shirts.

I have come across quite a few online sites that offer bespoken suits and shirts at a very reasonable price.

Is there anyone here that has tried any one of these, and can comment on the quality? The sites I have found so far are:

www.indochino.com
www.ardenreed.com
www.altonlane.com
www.blanklabel.com
www.blacklapel.com
www.moderntailor.com

I have put in an order at Arden Reed and so far received excellent service (had to make some changes to the shirt somewhat into the making). Have yet to receive the shirt and test the fit and quality.

I've dealt with Alton Lane. Super nice guys, the shirt I got (simple white twill) fit extremely well and was top notch quality. I haven't ordered from Alton Lane since though. The reason being when I ordered the shirt last year it was ~$90. This year their prices are ~$130ish so I've been looking for alternative.

same, except I don't order from them anymore because they take forever

Thing I hate about Indochino's is that you have to follow some online demo and use their system of measurements to measure yourself then send it in.

Another company I've been meaning to try for shirts is Luxire. Introductory prices are ~$60 and from what I gather they give you a ton of customization options. Monograms where you want them, collar styles not listed on their site, fabrics not listed, and the manager is quite responsive.

Indochino make spectacular suits. Modern tailor make awesome shirts but terrible suits.

I have a couple Indochino shirts. I would have expected a bit more quality in the areas with stitching...

I buy all my MTM suits from MySuitNY (start at $500 a piece)

I buy all my MTM shirts from moderntailor.com (decent fabrics with nice options start at $50-60 a piece)

Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis - when I was dead broke man I couldn't picture this

I've used Black Lapel and Moderntailor.

Moderntailor has quality fabrics and I haven't had any issues with the accuracy/quality of their craftsmanship. The one downside is that their packages require a signature when they come in the mail. Minor annoyance.

Black Lapel has great customer service, an even better blog, and pretty amazing suits. That said, I was expecting something a little more substantial of the fabric quality on the shirt I had made by them.

All things considered -> Black Lapel for suits and Moderntailor for my shirts.

I bought one suit from them, and the whole experience was fantastic. The suit fits perfectly and it was ready sooner than expected. Ask for Arthur at the main location at Madison and 42nd. I just went today to order my second suit.

I recently bought a suit from them as well. The pants were way too tight and jacket was not perfect in a few areas. Ended up getting a complete remake (on their account) after adjusting the measurements. Received a brand new one which fit perfectly and even got to keep the first one. Ordering additional suits from them in the future will now come out fitting perfect as well. Definitely recommended over buying an off the rack suit if you plan to spend $400+ on a suit.

Damn.. Did they not want the old one back? How were they sure yours didn't fit and were just trying to get a free suit?

You obviously have to specify what doesn't fit about it. I also provided photos to show how it was off. Normally they let you get it tailored and they reimburse up to $75. But certain parts like sleeve width you cannot tailor so they did a complete remake. I guess they have no use of requesting it back since they can't re-sell a custom suit. In theory yes I could wear both but the first one just does not fit that great so I probably will not be wearing it at all.

I got the suit, shirt, tie combo deal for around $280. The first go around the pants were fine. Shirt was was to short with the overall length and short in the arms. Jacket was tight in the chest and arm areas. They remade the shirt and jacket and both fit great now. Only problem I possibly see is the jacket and pants having a slightly different color (since the jacket was a remake) I have to get them in the sunlight to tell for sure.

I've tried pretty much all the MTM stores in soho. Suitsupply three piece was horrible, the fit was totally off. Indochino in my experience is average at best. The best and there is really no close second is a French boutique on Lafayette St between Houston and bleecker called Louis Purple. The staff is top notch and really know how to put you at ease and walk you through the whole process of picking the fabric(Dormeuil, holland and sherry, Vitale barberis, loro piana...), the fitting and customization. I ordered a grey Dormeuil Amadeus and the suit was TERRIFIC, the fit was perfect and should you need any alteration they have their in house tailor taking care of business. Needless to say that I only order through them now that they have my full measurements they regularly send me pictures of new fabrics and I only have to tell them which fabrics I want. Their suit ranges anywhere from $800-1400. Their shirts are of the same quality. In the same area lord Willys is also very very nice but VERY expensive too. They do bespoke so they can justify selling $4000 suits.

Hey Jdcrouch,

I went to their store on Broome, and was welcomed by one of their guys up there who walked me through the process and whatnot. Long story short the pants were okay, but the jacket was totally off. Right and left sleeve lenght was not the same, It needed to be taken out at the back, and lapels poppin off the chest even tough I'm by no means fat...So after all the tailoring it cost me way more than $950. I obviously had a bad experience with them, but a friend of mine only buys from them, I just have a hard time going back to a place where I didn't get satisfaction.

SleepDeprived:

For $300 it might be hard to find a custom tailor in NYC. Sadly, even average off-the-rack suits these days run north of $400. For that price range you're better of looking for a tailor in Hong Kong and Singapore (if you happen to be in that area of course) or making an appoitment with a Hong Kong tailor that visits the States.

if you're near chicago PM me - there is a guy that does custom suits for ~400 and has them produced in HK

And so it goes

You might want to look at suit seperates from a department store. I'm not sure on what the cost would be but like everyone says the fit is most important. Good luck.

I wear suit every day and I know these brands among some others like blacklapel and ownonly have the best quality price relation with very great and close support customer service which I think is important when buying online. I do not know if this quality for these prices will be always like this or just because is a new brand and want to get known but buying at ownonly it's a really bargain. I´ve seen some reviews of them already too. Hope it is helpful for you

[quote=jec]I've heard about them. Knot standard seems to have a better rep than indochino on styleforum.

Before you buy anything, actually read what is written in that thread and the thread that one of the forum users links to.

The guy that created the post looks to be a rep of the company...or something of the sort. He misspells Indochino a number of times and then plugs Knot's website. In addition, if you follow the link that is provided, you will see that just a couple days before he writes a great review about them, he is asking if anyone has heard of them, etc.

I would be a bit weary. As the Style Forum members pointed out, the suits don't lay right on the pictures and there is no mention of quality, only color. It might still be a decent option, but I just wanted to point out that the rave review might not be legit.

Here is the second thread from the 'rave' reviewer...

when you say custom, do you mean bespoke? if it is bespoke and not over a few grand, I honestly wouldn't risk it. there is a reason why bespoke is so expensive and anything less than the average seems suspect to me.

You can't get bespoke online, companies like Indochino are made to measure.

I was going to order some additional shirts from knot standard since I bought my suit and stumbled upon this and figured i would comment. It seems all who are reviewing have not tried a piece made by this company. Material is great and the fit is professional, and yes it's cut from the cloth ( bespoke). Go buy your average $100 dollar shirt from retailers and overpay and look like a slob. These are the best fitting clothes I have because that are made for me. Plus it's risk free 100% money back guarantee and $75 dollars for alterations. Trust me you will feel professional knowing that your threads fit. It's a good buy.

Well guys I dont think you can look over the possibility that the stylo guy is actually writing in for the Knots I mean seriously these things are getting so complicated these days that I would always prefer to go with ebay and Amazon and not get any deals at all :)

In Time I wander

I just received the classic Navy suit I ordered from these guys a couple days ago (took just under 3 weeks to arrive). I had my brother measure me using their website instructions. Also went with the $500 line vs. the more expensive $695 because it said they were more durable. The thing fits absolutely perfect. It’s my 3rd suit – the 1st I got in college off the rack (cost ~$400) and the 2nd was a graduation present from my parents where I went to a tailor (cost ~$900). In terms of price / quality, I don’t think you can beat this but I’m sure others on WSO have their own opinions about if it’s “truly” bespoke, etc. like above. Regardless, I think what I got is pretty sick.

Seeing as how you make $130k a year, there are plenty of brands that are affordable. It really just depends on what you're looking for.

For true bespoke shirts where every detail of the fit and style is nailed down, places like Turnbull & Asser on 57th and Geneva Custom Shirts on 55th are top quality. You'll obviously be paying a significant amount per shirt (Geneva starts at $250 a shirt, I believe, and Turnbull starts at $425 a shirt with a minimum quantity of 6 shirts for your first order), but the end product is as close to flawless as you'll get.

If that's those options are too much, CEGO is a step down, but they still do a really good job. For pricing, there are 2 options -- you can choose a fabric from a bunch of swatch books and have the shirts made in Newark starting at about $150 a shirt (minimum quantity for this option is 2 shirts). The more expensive, higher quality option, which is what I went with, is you can choose a higher-end fabric from all of the bolts of cloth they have in the shop and have the shirts made right there in the shop (prices start at around $200 per shirt and minimum quantity is 5 shirts). I have about a half dozen CEGO shirts and I love them. My torso is a pretty tough fit (aggressively sloped shoulders, pencil neck, super skinny waist) and Carl had me come back into the shop until he had my pattern done right (took 3 fittings in total, if I recall correctly).

And then below that, there are some less hands-on options like Proper Cloth and if you don't care to go into a shop, there are some online take-your-own-measurements places like Luxire. I don't have any experience with these brands, but at this price point, I wouldn't expect more than one fitting and there will be most likely be some degree of trial and error until you'll have a truly well-fitting shirt.

design:

No, Kabbaz would be as close to flawless as you'll get, but I doubt he'd want to pay $1,000 per dress shirt with a minimum first order of 6.

They don't make pants, and they have an ETA from when you submit an order for their shirts. As a first time order it'll probably take a month and change. They had to wait until my first shirt came in to make final adjustments before they allowed me to order in bulk.

you might try neogotiating with your local haberdasher. speaking from experience, I know some of these guys would be willing to negogiate if it means grabbing a young professional as a steady customer for life

yeah i used em and ordered five shirts. just go to a local tailor and have them do the measurements for you to ensure that they are accurate. my tailor did them for no charge. shirts are high quality, as good as my hugo boss shirts but a closer fit. definitely recommended.

These guys are great. Check their schedule to see when they'll be in your town. They rent a hotel suite, you make an appointment and they'll take your measurements, and you choose your fabric, cuffs, collar and monogram. It's $240 for 4 shirts, and they arrive in the mail in 6-8 weeks. Fit really well, and good quality.

Wong's Custom Tailor, downtown NYC. You have to go in person but I think their shirts start at $150 for three, depending on choice of fabric. I haven't tried them personally and have no desire for bespoke just yet, so I can't vouch for them....but they've been in business forever so they can't be all bad?

Get busy living

For that price range, you can go fully bespoke. I get the impression from your post that you prefer the convenient but impersonal aspect of ordering online; if that's the case, disregard my post. If you don't mind (for some it's actually a privilege) spending a few minutes developing a relationship with a tailor, you may enjoy the bespoke experience immensely.

CEGO is a standout.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

You should check out Hall & Madden. They have a unique business model in that they send you three shirts chosen by Hall & Madden for $150 every 3,4, or 6 months depending on how often you want new shirts.

I haven't personally tried their service but everything I have heard has been positive.

MySuitNy

That's my shit. Bought 5 from them so far. Great fit and they have lasted pretty well so far over the past year (I wear a suit everyday to work).

Good pricing too. Entry-level is around $500

A slob is a slob, iron your shirts, shine your shoes, make sure that your clothes fit.

It doesn't sound like they have a store. Sounds like they make visits.

One thing I question is the fact that they use tailors in Hong Kong. Don't custom suits go through a series of fittings? How do they do that at Astor&Black if they get your suits made elsewhere?

Call the number on the website and they'll put you in touch with one of their sales associates.

That person will either make a home/office visit and bring you samples to look at, or you can schedule an appointment to go see him/her. They don't have a central location (so I guess I misspoke earlier when I called it a "store"); they have a lot of smaller boutiques around the city where you can go if you don't ask them to come to you.

I use Taipan Row from Hong Kong. They do trunk tours through NY. A decent tailored suit in a 160+ weave with 2 pairs of pants will cost you a little over $3k.

Downside is that you only get on measurement session, no fitting and adjustment session.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

Price range? Full bespoke or MTM? could give My.Suit or Enzo Custom a shot. Suit Supply should be a good option OTR but they also do MTM A few co-workers go to Zohreh in midtown, i think they do both bespoke and MTM.

I use one of those tailors from hong kong who come to the city once a year and take measurements. The suits are usually pretty good and you have a lot of options to chose from. The only issue, they have no fitting session. They take your measurements and 6-8 weeks later send you a suit

I'm a woman - so not going to list actual places where I have gotten mine. I'm a little confused how a made to measure suit could not fit though - at least without a little extra tailoring if necessary.

Do you have a relationship with a good tailor? If not, I'd find one and try your existing suits there. They may end up being perfect with minor tweaks like taking in the sleeves or exaggerating the waistline a bit more if you are trim.

If you have tried tailoring the MTM suits, it's possible that the cuts and styling aren't to your liking on you. Models for mid-range suits are going to be shorter than you, plus you are buying American suits. I'd try browsing the British and Italian designers in-store (I'm inclined to think you should start with British). Take photos of what you like on you and compare it to what you have been buying... you will probably see some differences. You also will probably gravitate to either the British or Italian cuts. From a cut and fit perspective there is a world of difference between European and American suiting.

I'd hold off on ordering completely custom unless you can clearly articulate what you are looking for in cut and fit. Anything less than $3,500 and locally-made with multiple fittings is still going to run the risk of leaving you unhappy.

With a mid-range MTM suit the problems should be quality of fabrication and construction, not the fit of the suit itself. This is why I think the situation may be something salvageable at a lower price point with tailoring or different cut/style.

Caveat: this also could get a little complicated because some designers claim to have cuts designed to satisfy different markets. Before someone comes in and says "but random American designer makes a european cut suit, why bother looking at Italian designers?". Sure X designer will make a "european cut" suit... but this is generally when compared with what they usually offer. Italian designers interpretations of a european fit suit will be noticeably different.

I'm taller than you with an athletic build and with a bit of tailoring I've never had an issue. It honestly just sounds like you want to justify dropping some extra cash... not that there's anything wrong with that.

In NYC, Alan David Custom Tailors is popular among bankers and lawyers. I've been a customer for about 12 years. A suit runs about $2K. Be warned, their fulfillment is pretty slow, but the quality is excellent.

If you're really willing to pay to play, Savile Row is the way to go. Several of the best-known tailors do U.S. trunk shows, if you can't get to London.

I've had nothing but fantastic experiences with Tom James. He was super detailed in the amount of measurements and the suits have been very nice. The custom shirts and ties they supply have been great also.

NOTE: I am not in NY so I am talking about a Tom James location elsewhere.

Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I had shirts made at both places in addition to a few others. my comments are below.

Imparali - inexpensive but I did not like the fit. there was no shape and it looked like an off-the-rack shirt.

Alexander West - they only sell shirts and I was very happy with their cut. similar price to imparali. they only make one shirt in the beginning to make sure the shirt fits.

Listerouge-paris - these guys are very good. i guess it is a french thing - starts at $250 or $300. They only make shirts and will make one in the beginning to test out the fit.

Turnbull & Asser - very expensive and their cut is horrible.

hope that helps!

Tailor Imparali definite is a good custom tailor in new york and if you are in Bangkok and looking for the reputed custom tailor then Toms Fashion is a good place for you.

4 Custom Made Shirts with Monogram for 92.75.

Does anyone have any experience with paul fredrick? Is this worth the money? Are they nice shirts?

Thanks

More expensive, but also more tailored and I've been very happy with the custom shirts I got from Blank Label - click the banner ad above to check them out (affiliate of WSO)

I understand that I shouldn't monogram something, because it is like above my pay grade or what ever.

But people on my floor, even at my level, have monogramed shirts. Not that I am going to do it, but out of curiosity would it be alright to monogram it in white so it completely matches the shirt?

thanks

So you say you understand that you shouldn't monogram anything, ever, at all because its 'like above your pay grade or whatever' and then you go on to ask if you should do it in a different color?

No means no.

Hey, three things to people who responded to me in the past.

1) The paul frederick shirts turned out pretty bad. I am not ordering from them again.

2) Indochino's traveling tailor is coming to NYC this month. Make an appointment and check out their shit. Free custom made dress shirt with a suit (370+ for the suit and shirt)

2) Bonobos - 25 dollars off 75 dollars with this link if you are a first time customer. They have trendy clothes, and pretty nice shirts that could be worn to work. http://bono.bs/x/73yBb

Thanks for the feedback! Just did Indochino traveling tailor; you'll be very happy. Can also second what Patrick said about Blank Label; best dress shirt I own.

Here's a secret:

Bespoke can be great but it's highly volatile. Ready to wear tends to be ok most of the time. So if you have little money i think you'll do much better with an ok ready to wear shirt than with a bespoke one that sucks.

Not sure if you can get custom shirts in a short time, but Indochino is doing some travelling tailor thing in NY in July. Also, mysuit NY also does pretty decent custom shirts in the range of 100-150 pre tax.

You just missed this guy but Ive used him and he's good and affordable.

Second. Started my work wardrobe with him in HK and pick up more stuff when he swings by NYC.

Get a few extra if you get the = mother of pearl buttons and ask for a "canvas" collar (what he calls his nice collar), those shirts hold up well over years of washing.

tbh, i thought tyrwhitt was terrible quality. shirts rip on the elbows VERY fast and they wrinkle worse than any other shirt I've every had. invest in a nordstrom smartcare shirt. it'll be the best $60 you ever spend on shirts.

People tend to think life is a race with other people. They don't realize that every moment they spend sprinting towards the finish line is a moment they lose permanently, and a moment closer to their death.

Try Hugo Boss slims? I like them; they have a slightly different fit than BB extra slim and CT slims.

I also love Thomas Pink slim-fits, but they might be high for your price range. I don't buy them often myself.

Theory has some slim-fitting shirts, and you can often find them marked down for ~$20 at Century 21, if you are in NYC.

Get off the rack shirts tailored. Ask to bring in sleeves and midsection using darts. My guy cuts out all excess fabric when sewing in the darts. Looks great - just don't get fat. I buy Boss by Hugo Boss and other brands with more conservative fabrics to get tailored. Made to measure is going to cost at least $150 a shirt if you buy something decent.

If you do end up at TOPMAN or Indochino, let us know your thoughts on the experience and the quality of fabric and craftsmanship.
