Yes - I would like to help keep the group active - as I think it's important.

I've got a topic... If you have NO energy experience and minimal transactional experience what are the best ways to break into energy finance? Whether it be sales, trading, banking, etc?

I ask because this is my predicament. I am a 1st year MBA student who wants to make a career in the energy space, but am finding that the energy hedge funds and boutique E&P I-banks and PE funds are looking for previous energy experience for their summer interns and full-time hires. Aside from building the technical skills, what else can someone like me do to be more marketable in this space?

look at the jump your trying to make? no prior exp but looking for a HF and PE job... why not focus on a big formal training program offered by a BB bank or a small boutique where career changers actually get jobs. What about an energy focus within a major corp? what about the big oil firms? GE? NRG? Apache? Shell? all firms that have a formal training program for MBA's.

Focus on one... sales, trading, banking, MC etc etc then go full steam ahead..the worse you can do is try to half ass all of them....its too much to keep up in the limited time you have

pwt5, I just got my MBA but it has been very difficult getting an energy trader job but was recently offered a scheduler position: How easy is it to transition from a scheduler to a trader position? What advice could you offer me?

Thanks for the insight monty09. I guess I've been spreading myself a little thin. I'll definitely focus on one and pursue it. I'm just curious as to how I can make myself more marketable to E&P companies.

Chindo - I think monty09 is the person you want to ask this question of. You're way ahead of me in the job hunt. I'm only a 1st year MBA trying to find an internship right now. Not sure how easy it is to make the transition but I know from visiting Anadarko and the commodity desk at Barclay's in Houston with my school's energy club that most of the traders did some sort of scheduling in their previous lives.

I'm in Dallas at SMU for b-school. We took the trip down to Houston back in October. Next time I'm heading that way I'll definitely let you guys know so we can meet up for some beers.

Monty is your shop trading hydrocarbons or just power? Wasn't clear from your post. Thanks in advance.

Do you know Spencer V? Back from the good old days when Huston was E-town? He's a personal friend, the very good friend of one of my closest friends/collaborators.
