iPhone 5 - when will it come out?
And why is it taking so long? Every generation has come out late June or early July each year except this year. Anyone know what the iPhone 5 sitch is?

Bump - In NZ there are futures on this - currently @73% probability of an October release. If any WSO people have info they should post! https://www.ipredict.co.nz/app.php?do=contract_detail&contract=IPHONE5…
October 7
i already have one... found it at a bar.
It's been delayed so much due to the hype surrounding the iphone 4's release on verizon. They reached a new audience, so there has not been as much of a demand to come out with a new product
Didn't the disasters in Japan slow production down big time? They are also creating the phone for all major US carriers and Steve Jobs left
Is it a known fact that this phone won't be 4G? I still have the 3GS and an upgrade won't cost me much, but unless there are some significant upgrades (4G or otherwise), I'm thinking I'll wait until next year.
The awesome thing about the iphones (outside of the phone itself) is that I can sell my 2.5 year old phone for $200, which is what I originally paid for it.
I could see it having hspa+ support but I doubt LTE

I am surprised, no thread about the introduction of the new iPhone 5S yet?
Did you guys see it? What's the verdict? Are you gonna buy it?
Gold iPhone's? Sounds like the revival of the golden Nokia 8800 phone...I am quite interested how many people will actually opt for that.
Looks like soon it won't even be necessary anymore to have a camera, even if you're interested in having high quality pictures taken.
That is actually the feature that I am most excited about. Reminds me of old Sci-Fi movies...
Has anyone tested it via Beta versions yet?
Quotes from TheVerge
The phones they announced seem fine - top of the line 5s and a repackaged 5 in funky colours. What worries me more is the strategy they are taking. The 5c should have been priced $100 lower as the differential between that and a full 5s is slim. Also - no China Mobile announcement this morning?!
I'm still using my 5 and won't upgrade until my contract runs out but I didn't see anything yesterday which would mean I swap away from using an iPhone. The hardware upgrades on the 5s are pretty spectacular.
What I found the worst was that when they were about to give the presentation for the 5S, someone posted an article about the 6 already. Seriously now, how can buying a 5S possibly be attractive if you know that there will be an entirely new, even better, iPhone in less than a year?
I am due for an upgrade and am waiting just to see the reviews on the 5s before maybe jumping to HTC One, specifically the battery life on the 5s. I know what Apple claimed, but those numbers always seem inflated. Also, this jump to 64 bit -- maybe they are better then Windows but I thought when Windows made the move that there was all sorts of software compatibility issues. Finally, curious how this thumb reader holds up to continued use, drops, etc.
good point re the 64bit stuff. I guess the first couple of reviews should be published next week. I'm also trying to figure out whether its worth buying the 5s...
I thought the 5c should have been priced at least $200 less to make it an ideal target in emerging countries.
Will replace my current work phone, just like every year. Apple is pretty good at taking my money.
5S actually seemed like a significant spec increase but I don't really get the 5c, its still expensive
$99 for a 5c with a 2-year contract doesn't seem that bad. Free 4s with a 2-year contract. The non-subsidized prices are outrageous, but I don't see many people buying an unlocked, non-subsidized phone.
I have the 4s and am waiting for the 6 next year. Going to switch to AT&T from Verizon.
Nice post. I was thinking of writing something up but a different angle for later in the week. I'll link back to yours as well to give you some page hits.
Looking forward to it, thanks
I've been excited to see the iPhone 5s announcement. I have an iPhone 4 and my contract just ended last month. I was on the fence about what my next phone would be, but yesterday's announcement definitely pushed me toward an Android.
Really? Why? What's so bad about it?
What the hell do people expect out of a phone at this point? It's a phone. How revolutionary does it need to be?
It's almost silly how hyped up these product launches get.
Interesting how three BB's (including GS and UBS) downgraded Apple's rating today. The issues seem to revolve around pricing, as Android still beats them handily for similar products. Also heard a 5S with new contract will cost around $700+ in China.
For the most part people have overlooked what I think is the most important new feature - iOS7.. it essentially redefines the user experience, which is what sets Apple apart from other alternatives. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks pretty sleek and could further widen the quality gap between iPhone and Android.
that's true, I am actually waiting for iOS 7 myself. A few friends of mine have downloaded it via the developer account yet, but I never got around to test it on their iPhones. It does look quite nice, though.
Been reading around. Seems like the most frequent complaints have been no material improvement in batterly life and the lack of a larger screen. My 4s has a smaller screen than the 5/5s so it would be an upgrade in screen size for me, but I think many people are wanting the "phablet" screens, which I don't get. I already have an iPad. My cell phone fits nicely into my front pocket. What real benefit is there in having a Zack Morris phone?
If you ask me, people aren't buying iPhones at the same rate because they are now boring. No one likes to be the boring kid with the boring phone. Apple as a company can not keep saying they are changing the world with every new iPhone if it essentially looks like the one that came before it. Sure the size might be a bit different, or the colors might be a bit different. But you have had essentially the same phone for now 8 iterations. Its time for a drastic change. Change the way the OS looks, drastically change how the phone interacts with the user. Upgrade the battery. Offer a skew of different phones. Do something do anything! The company has gone from the cutting edge of cool to a over hyped joke.
I don't necessarily disagree here, but I still think the stock is cheap.
China market is huge and if they do happen to make an announcment of something "cool" or innovative in the next 6-12 months, I could see the stock running back up over 600+ easily.
It's a maturing company - nothing wrong with that as long as they keep spending R&D and get a big hit every 5 years or so and are able to hold onto some of the iphone margins.
Personally, I think what they are doing with the lower cost iphone is smart to get more people into the icloud ecosystem which makes switching costs much higher. Give up some profit now to get into a huge market, gain market share and get people hooked into their ecosystem so they don't want to leave...
Sounds eerily familiar to a stock that everyone still loves (AMAZON)...
I'm not aware that iPhone sales have dropped off.
Getting the next Nexus of LG G2.
I think the real reason Apple chose to keep an 8 megapixel camera was to keep the bandwidth/storage needed for its iCloud data centers under control. Its a lot cheapert to simply market it as a better decision than simply packing in more pixels to a similar sized sensor.
There is literally no need of anyone that's not a professional photographer using their work for billboards to have more than 5-6 megapixels of resolution. 8 is plenty, and with the new 15% larger pixel size on the sensor, I'm guessing this will be a great camera. In fact, the photos that Apple released look amazing. They're mostly outdoor too, so I'm thinking they are pretty accurate.
I find it downright comical that people still own iPhones.
A repackaged 5 with colors for $100 and a 5S with hardware that is stale before it even hit the market. Maybe you guys have small hands, but I can't understand for the life of me why men use iPhones.
Look on the bright side, at least you can walk into an Apple store and participate in the trade in program.
Once again, Apple starts off well and its lack of continuing innovation will lead to its demise. Apple will go down as the ultimate case study of a company that hit it big twice, but mismanaged their hits until its ultimate death.
Oh wow who let the fanboy in here. I knew it was a matter of time before I'd see something like this.
5S with hardware that was stale before it hit the market? Are you blind? Can you read? Its the only 64 bit phone in the world, and will be for a while. Its the most powerful phone in the world, and will be for a while, I'm sure. Its more powerful than most people's computers from the last couple years. What are you talking about.
Sounds like you're more worried about "appearing manly" than anything else, in that case your 5.5" Samsung monstrosity should work out great for you. Some of us like phones that actually work, and that are designed with a certain element of care. That's why I use one.
People like you have been predicting Apple's demise since Woz and Jobs moved out of the garage. And you haven't been right yet. Just stop. You're embarrassing yourself.
I'm at the point where I don't want to ever upgrade. I have a 4S. Dropping a few hundred simply because my contract is up and something "better" exists is getting to be ridiculous when you consider the marginal utility of these new versions. Slight increase in speed, screen size, picture resolution. It just isn't worth it.
I will buy anything shiny that comes from Apple.
If you're still buying Apple's outdated junk hardware you are an absolute brainwashed minnion/fanboy.
Lol. Junk. Ok.
thanks for the info
WTF? How old are you?
I actually bought an Iphone because it looked alot like my old Iphone. Next you're gonna call me a fanboy because I still like french fries even though people have been frying different (arguably better) stuff for few decades now.
I mean, some customers have jobs and stuff, so we really don't care what's the best way to play a game, post embarassing pictures or whatever... Or at least we don't care as much as you.
The home button is now a finger print scanner.. all the felons out there better not be carrying their IPhones while committing crimes or they will be iPinched.
I think there's a pretty decent chance that the fingerprint scan will be awful and people will be increasingly annoyed by failed attempts to unlock the phone. Most people using Bloomberg Anywhere may see where I'm coming from - but you just need the Bloomberg thingy once or twice a day.
Maybe they'll make that optional, but giving options is not their main strength.
It's already been shown to work extremely well. And of course, you are not required to use it. You can still use the passcode if you want. Or just not lock your phone.
Haha, well put
EvanM is sticking with Apple's antiquated technology for the bright colors
It is comical that people have been predicting the demise of Apple for 30 years. Today Apple is one of the largest firms by market cap in the world and runs very healthy profits each year. But yeah, another person predicting the end.
Damn I've waited forever for the gold but it looks so damn feminine. Really wished they had black with that gold. Faacck
I just bought a Q10 today. My shaky hands can't type on these glass thingees anymore, gotta have real keys.
i hope the fingerprint unlock is optional. I can see potentially HUGE problems with people getting aggravated from not being able to unlock someone else's phone to use.
The gold version of the phone is supposed to help them break into the Chinese market more-so, and from the hype in the office it might end up working..
Droids and iPhones are both transcendent, remarkable products. Competition is GREAT for the consumer. Add in Windows phones and some other itterations and you've got a remarkable market out there. I use the iPhone because I personally like Macs (I have a Macbook Pro), I like iPods, iTunes, iPads, etc. and the integration between the products is pretty easy and seemless. I also live close to several Apple Stores and the customer service is great and they are there to help in the rare instance that an Apple product breaks down (I have not experienced any malfunctions at all in my 3-year-old iPad, my 18-month-old iPhone 4s or my 6-month-old Macbook). The quality of manufacture and the physical beauty of Apple products is beaten by none. Also, I like how my Apple products are not as susceptible to malware--my last computer completely broke down from malware despite my paid-for 3rd party security. I've got no additional security on my Macbook and I've had no malware issues in 6 months.
Are Droids great products? Absolutely! I choose to use Apple products (in this case the iPhone), however, for varying reasons that others may not care about. It doesn't make me juvenile or a "fanboy"--it makes me an adult. Adults make independent, varying decisions based on their income, usage, and unique needs and past experiences.
Apple products are susceptible to malware and viruses
"Not as susceptible". I clearly wrote that. "As" indicates a degree. And it is fact that Apple is not as susceptible to malware. That's not even debatable.
So I am not usually an apple fan but I actually liked this phone. At the moment I have the S4 and it's an amazing phone but the iphone 5S had to good new hardware that nobody else has. The finger print scanner and the MBA business schools">M7 chip. The MBA business schools">M7 chip is really a good idea because it takes a lot of annoying things out. Like asking you to join a wifi while your driving and also the flexibility it gives the current people that are going to purchase it and then a year from now going to purchase the iwatch (in which I hope is better than the smart watch Samsung put out...that was a whole bag of sadness).
The finger print scanner is a really good idea...if it works. Motorola tried it with the Atrix and it sucked completely. But if it works on the iphone then ya it's an amazing idea. I know nobody likes entering passwords in their phone, most people can see the pin code and still get in your phone, and when you don't put a password on your phone its a headache because if you leave it anywhere you have to worry about people going through it. Phones right now have almost your entire life on them. Email, text messages, pictures, videos, your facebook, twitter, linkedin,...everything. So if you don't have a password on it and lose it some one could potentially really screw you over. The finger print scanner should fix that.
I think it's a great phone and it is amazing. The Gold color is a bold move and I am glad that they did it. It's an interesting color to go with because it stands out and its unique.
The 5C on the other hand is not really much. It's kinds of fail IMHO.
It would be wonderful if Samsung had done something new and unique with hardware. But they didn't and this is disappointing. This is coming from a huge android fan.
I don't get the colors thing. I mean, it's still an ugly looking brick and most owners would have only seen the color for the 5 minutes before they put a case on it. Or they could join one of the many adolescents/young adults who carry around shattered iPhones for the last 20 months of their contract.
I love their Ipods but prefer Samsung phones. Different strokes, well, you know the rest.
Fingerprint scanner is just a gimmick like Siri.
I'm looking forward to the iPhone 6. I really think they need to go Kevlar casing and water resistant with a 5" screen. Also, increase batterly life by 50% by doing what it's done with OS Mavericks. With its current features of having the best phone camera in the business with an improved fingerprint scan the phone would fly off the shelves. Combine the best features of competitors into a true power phone.
If you are wanting the 6 to have the best of today's tech, you will be a happy person when it comes out in a year.
The combined best features of today's tech, yes. Nobody offers all of that today.
Forfeiting Self-Incrimination via iPhone 5s (Originally Posted: 09/15/2013)
Oh, America land of the Free. Our Fifth Amendment, which guarantees that “no person shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself,” may not apply when it comes to biometric-based fingerprints (things that reflect who we are) as opposed to memory-based passwords and PINs (things we need to know and remember).
In court, a testimonial is only a testimonial when it reveals the contents of your mind. We can’t invoke the privilege against self-incrimination to prevent the government from collecting biometrics like fingerprints, DNA samples, or voice exemplars. Why? Because the courts have decided that this evidence doesn’t reveal anything you know. It’s not testimonial.
So, what are your thoughts on Apple's biometric unlock? Do you think that we'll see people having to forfeit their iPhone 5s data during trial because of this reasoning? Personally, I'm not worried, because unless your skirting around some sketchy activities or engaged in some white collar crime (really any general crime at all), you're all good in the long run. Besides, I'd hope anyone in crime would be smart enough not to use an iPhone.
You have to admit the biometric unlock is a solid way to keep people out of your phone. Now all we need is a "Guest Mode".
Interesting. Might be a better to question to ask over at JDOasis.
Evidence is evidence and testimony is testimony. Can't be compelled to testify against yourself; however, any legally gathered evidence should be fine.
I'm a bit confused here. If the government has a reason to get your fingerprints and goes through the due process of obtaining that authority, they bring you in and have your fingerprints taken. Why is the iPhone suddenly a game changer? Why would they ask you to turn over your iPhone? They'd just get you fingerprinted, just like they do now.
No, see the thing is, we're talking about testimony and self-incrimination here. We're not talking about the fingerprints, we're talking about how the fingerprint unlock on the 5s, in layman's terms, means they can force you to open the phone and divulge the data. This is because a fingerprint is part of "what you are" rather than "what you know" which is a technicality that can be leverage in court to bypass your 5th Amendment right.
But, like I said, I'm not worried. I just thought it was interesting.
I'm pretty sure the phone company or the manufacturer can open the phone up if the proper due process is taken.
Agreed. They get a subpoena and they get whatever they need. Just like when they want to recover data from your hard drive.
Your name is on the contract. Why the hell do they need your fingerprint to prove what they already know?
We're not talking about who owns the phone. We're talking about the data.
Lmao... Another sheep thinking Apple is changing the world. Buddy, laptops have had this technology for a decade now, and no, they aren't going to ask you for your iPhone 5s so they can look at your little sister's nudes. They stick your finger in some ink like you see on your favorite show- CSI.
Don't really get the point of this post? Pretty sure if they need to see the phone then they will make you unlock it. Whether you use the fingerprint or not, I don't see it holding them up....

Discuss.
iphone site slow. put it on engadget or gizmodo and liveblog it.. or macrumors... ya diggggg
I started off with iPhone3 and progressed year by year with 3GS and 4.
Plan on getting the 5 as well...UNLESS, Android can sway me. So far, they haven't been able to.
I hate the fact that ive been using an Aapl product for the past 4 years...but i cant say im disappointed.
Since i have been with Sprint, I have been dying to buy one. Where can you sign up for pre order / wait list for Sprint users?
My 3GS is so slow right now. I NEED to upgrade. I used to change phones every 6 months. I've had this Iphone for two years. That is how dominant the phone is. So pumped!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/04/apples-lets-talk-iphone-keynote-live…
I am a former iPhone user that has since switched to the android OS. I really don't see the appeal of the iPhone or why people use it when there is a better OS out there that allows custom ROM flashing.
How the fck does that help me or make my smartphone using experience better?
I think droid is nice, but it isn't there yet. The Iphone is clean and simple. Maybe in a couple of years I will convert, but right now I am happy with the IPhone
Have you tried both?
What specifically do you like about the iPhone over android devices?
One place I checked said the 5 is only for Sprint, which I don't think is right......can anyone verify?
My GF has the newest Droid and had one before. I find them esthetically not really pleasing (not completely, just like the Iphone better) and some of the older ones were a little buggy. They are getting better, but I would like a little more simplicity with them.
I've hacked my Iphone and Ipad as well as in the process of tweaking Unbutu and everything. I just don't want to hassle with my phone right now. Different strokes for different folks and the no flash thing pissed me off. Right now the Iphone just works for me.
I'll say this though, the Droid is tempting me. Nothing could do that a couple years ago. Competition moves fast for sure.
iPhone hardware is really good, I just can't deal with the locked down OS. If you are a big fan of the way iOS looks and you want it on android, check out http://miuiandroid.com/ it has a fairly compatible interface.
I will say expect big things in the hardware department starting in the next year due to Google's acquisition of Motorola.
XKCD anyone? http://xkcd.com/178/
I agree with ANT. Android looks really cool but I don't need to be able to do all the shit that Android fan boys jizz themselves about. iOS presents a cleaner interface with less bugs and is easier to use in my experience which is why I am an iPhone user.
As for me, I'm still rocking the iPhone 3G. Dinosaur up in here. If the iPhone 5 specs look ridiculous/there's a reason to get it, I'll go for the 5, otherwise I'm looking forward to this because the 4's price will drop. I've had an upgrade since March and have been waiting for this announcement for a while.
Yah, I resent the Apple control also. I used to jailbreak my phone and stuff, but I never used all the apps I would steal. Only thing I miss is bootlegged TomTom.
The control sucks, but it also saves you from messing up your phone. Apple realizes how stupid the majority of people are lol.
My wife and I have the 3GS. If Apply came out with an Iphone 5 that ran 4G LTE, I would be ordering 2 today. Since all indications are that this release will be a 4S with faster processor and a personal assistant (that I don't fully understand, but probably don't care too much about) I'm not sure if I'll buy.
For the past 6 months I have been planning on upgrading our iphones and then selling the 3GSs that we have. It's almost a no brainer, I'll pay $200 per phone and sell each 3GS for $150. However, next year when the iphone is likely 4G I'll want that and probably be pissed that I'm locked into a contract.
Maybe I should just get the new phones and then wait an extra year for better 4G. I don't know, I guess it depends on the new iphone sales pitch today.
If it's a 4S, I'll hold off because I don't want an identical situation to my most recent where I got the 3GS and missed the major upgrade of the 4 because I mistimed the product cycles. I have a beat-to-hell 3GS now and it needs to go, same boat as ANT.
If it's a true 4G phone, I'm sold, sign me up now, I'll be waiting in line overnight at Apple Store Soho.
i have my iphone 4 and unless they come out with something crazy im sticking with it , ill wait for next years reiteration when my contract is up.. unless sprint comes out with some sexy package which is rumored
i like the android OS but to be honest the retina display blows away anything android has right now and also iOS has much more in terms of video games for my nerd side to rage with.
Well this just isn't true. The actual operating system that android has is way ahead of anything iOS has right now, and actually will have in the future. Do some research on the subject.
Further, in terms of video games, android wins again with its extensive rom/emulator accessibility. I can cannect a wii mote or a ps3 remote to my phone through bluetooth and play games on my tv through my phones HDMI port.
LOL. I actually bought a pretty sweet laptop from a friend with a broken screen. I threw Ubutu on it and XBMC and hooked it up to my TV. Interfaced it with my Ipad and BANG, awesome TV Computer set up. Still tweaking it so VLC can be the default Video player and installing audio codec, etc, but it is going well so far. Tough to do it when I get home from work so it is more of a weekend project.
I'm an adroid user, and I will probably switch to iphone when my contract expires. I like to try out new apps, and iphone typically gets them before android. The product is also cleaner and faster. Android is meant to be a price-competitive smart phone, so the incentive to be innovative with new features is not really there.
I'll probably be sticking with my iPhone4 too. The 5 will most likely have a bigger screen, better camera, perhaps thinner...the biggest difference will be iOS 5, which you'll be able to use on a 4. Unless there's huge features of iOS 5 that only works with the iPhone5, I don't really see the point in upgrading. Even if you have a 3GS, just upgrade to the 4 (or perhaps 4GS?) which will probably see a $99 price point.
Rumor has it that you will see a somewhat overhauled iPhone 4S today, with different/better dual core processor, a plastic or potentially metallic back (as opposed to the ceramic/glass concoction they have now), better front facing camera as well as better back facing camera (1080 video support) and 1GB of ram. Also talk about multiple band support basically allowing it to be a 'world' phone and NFC support.
As for the iPhone 5, possibly a aluminum unibody case with near edge-to-edge screen (at least width wise) that might be 4 inches. Also talk about 1.2Ghz dual core processor, 8MP camera with 1080 video support among a few other things. Also big rumors swirling that Sprint might have an exclusive on the iPhone 5 for a period of time, in which case the 4G WiMax rumors could also be true.

Are there arbitrage opportunities for these phones in China/Taiwan ? What's the best way to go about it ?
Look, iphones are simply more prestigous and have way better exit opps when compared to droid.
Exactly.
Epic fail. So depressed.
that was an epic fail = /. I'll stick with my 4 for now.
Ill make the jump from my 3Gs, but I was expecting something much cooler. So sad.
Upgrading here. Looks good to me. Not sure if going to VZW or sticking with T.
ill wait until next year for an actual upgrade from my 4
Haha, I just saw this quote in the elevator:
"LADIES call me the iPhone 5 because I'm wrapped in mystery but ultimately a disappointment"
LOL. I've been having the 'no iPhone 5' discussion all week with people. One girl was like, "I was at the cell phone store today and the guy told me to wait until next week when the iPhone 5 comes out"...which immediately confirmed to me that it wasn't...because if there is one thing we all know is that the guy at the AT&T/Verizon/Sprint store have no clue what's happening.
I just felt that there hasn't been enough evidence to support an iPhone 5. Though there have been some, there were very few leaked photos of the parts or cases, etc. Plus, the event was held in the smallest room ever...which is not Apple's way of introducing brand new, flagship products.
Kudos to Apple on creating some interesting new features and allowing speculation run wild. I'm sure the iPhone 5 will truly be impressive when it comes out next year. I'll stick to my Android since I don't care for Apple much and look forward to seeing the Nexus Prime when it comes out....next week!!!!
Regards
^^^^^^^^^ NEXUS PRIME!!!!!!!!!
I could never switch from an Android device after getting used to widgets. Scrolling stock ticker, RSS feeds, etc. are much more important than anything I can get from an iPhone. The only tangible benefit the iPhone has over my current phone (Evo 4G) is battery life which I can totally see as a real upside.
Was planning on buying what I though was the Iphone 5 when it came out. I'm not particularly knowledgable of the Android, anyone know its Iphone equivalent
Siri is the woman that every man wants, never says no and always listens. That is all.
Haven't decided yet, disinclined to upgrade from 3GS. May cop only the 4, splurge on the out-of-upgrade purchase with the 5.
Once I realized how strong the market is for used iPhones, I decided to get every upgrade as soon as it comes out.
Given how much I use my phone, even if I pay retail... the upgrade is still worth it.
Android/Google fans please don't beat off to this video
...it creeps me out to think that someone else is masturbating to the same thing I am...

they cancelled the Oct 11 event :(
Here is a link for anybody who wants to test out iOS5 (next major iPhone software update). It's easy to do but the downloads take a while. There's also help in the comments of the blog telling you what files to extract etc.
http://www.lockergnome.com/ios/2011/10/05/how-to-upgrade-to-ios-5-right…
I did it for my 3GS.. pretty nice.
This is a nice summary of why many Android owners aren't impressed with the iPhone 4S...

Ugh Apple 4S or Samsung Galaxy... choices choices....
I have the Lux AEterna playing in the background, but I probably will get the iPhone 4S

AndyLouis, here's a poll topic that should be able to answer people's question as to whether or not Apple's growth is sustainable since we all know the iPhone is their flagship product.
What cell phone will you purchase in the next year?
A. iPhone 5 B. Android C. Blackberry D. Windows E. None of the above F. Not buying a new phone
If I buy a new phone in the next year (got a 4S when they released) I'll be getting an iPhone 5.
Android is an OS and the phones running it are very different.
Samsung's Galaxy S3 will be a great device (announced officially this week). Retail availability in North America by Q3. I doubt this is the device that will break Apple's market share entirely, but it's definitely an excellent alternative. Comparing my S2 to the current iPhone, I can't really imagine why anyone would voluntarily look at that terrible iPhone screen.
I'll be buying one when my contract ends in March. I currently have an iPhone 4 and, regardless of specs, it is just so much easier to use and much more intuitive than any other device I have encountered.
I have to buy another iPhone 4 pretty soon because the home button on mine literally stopped working. Looks like I'll be able to upgrade in time for iPhone 7.
Same thing happened to me. Just replace the button, the parts are cheap and its an easy fix.
stvr, what other devices have you "encountered"?
I personally dislike Apple products, so... Android all the way. I have an Android phone and tablet, and of course use a PC for all my computing needs. The only Apple product I own is an old iPod Nano that I received as a gift from a friend.
iPhone 5 Sales Worth a Half Point of GDP? (Originally Posted: 09/11/2012)
Disclosure: I'm long AAPL.
We're just a day away from Apple's release event for the much anticipated iPhone 5 (and maybe iPad Mini?) and the rumor mill is going full bore. It's clear that sales of the new phone are going to be staggering, but just how big? Some folks believe that iPhone 5 sales will add a half percentage point to Q4 GDP numbers.
Think about that for a minute: a single product from a single manufacturer accounting for 50 basis points of US GDP. JP Morgan analyst Michael Feroli is anticipating sales of 8 million units worth $3.2 billion.
I guess all will be revealed tomorrow. For those who can't wait, here's a CNET video addressing the most persistent rumors:
So do you guys think all this hype is already baked into the price, or will this release catapult the company to $1,000 a share? I'm thinking about buying more and I'll let you know when I do.
Do you think a half point of GDP is realistic, or all hype?
If the Iphone 5 is truly a unique device that incorporates more of the current technology (seen in Android devices) then I think the sales will be high, but just not sure how high. I also think that the majority of the hype is already built into the price but again that is with expectations that the Iphone will be as "revolutionary" as the Iphone 4 was to the 3/3S. If the 5 is able to show software and hardware advances on par with Android/Windows, I see AAPL skyrocketing. Also with the move towards Virgin using Iphone as prepaid that could increase Iphone's market outside current users (who may wait for an upgrade a year or more) and if AAPL can reach this market then I say the sky is the limit
I believe it. The consumer for richer or poorer has no limit on what they will spend on shiny new products especially when they are from apple.
The fanboys are going to go apeshit no matter what the iPhone 5 looks like or does
Getting the iPhone 5.
.
I've been following the iPhone 5 rumors for a while now because I've been thinking about upgrading. My wife and I are the frugal people that still own a 3GS, but we've been considering upgrading. While I don't think the new iPhone is completely revolutionary (I'm not sure that any phones really will be at this point), we are ordering 2 5s as soon as they become available.
I'm not a huge fan of the longer screen, but there are so many incremental improvements over the 3G that we're going to make the move. Also, because people can take unlocked AT&T iphones to cheaper carriers the resale value on these phones is pretty high, so this will help subsidize the purchase of our 5s.
Note: For those of you in the US willing to settle for not having the newest phone and wanting to save some $ look into T Mobile (prepaid) and SmartTalk.
4g and hardware spec upgrade alone should be enough of a reason to upgrade from a 2 year old phone.
Do you know how to unlock phones?
It's an NBA market - Nothin But AAPL
Eddie,
I won't be shocked if this does bump GDP by a quarter of a point. Apple products have a way of doing that. Not just that, considering how big of a company Apple is (both in Market Cap and in relation to the entire market), any major product line will have an impact on GDP. Personally, I think they will take a huge boost with the iPhone5, but I don't think it's worth the upgrading unless you still on the pre-iPhone4 era of iPhones. Then again, I'm a Droid user so I'll use that until something that is open source and better comes along.

Interesting commentary.
Isn't this just common sense? Don't understand all the hoopla over the excessively reductive JCP report
Damn you! I came here to post this link thinking I finally had something to add to WSO. Guess I can go back to lurking and trying to learn what I can. lol
The iPhone 5 - will you be getting it? (Originally Posted: 09/12/2012)
Very simple blog post today - the new iPhone 5 which Apple announced just a few hours ago. If you've been following the leaks in any way at all, you already know the phone. Nevertheless, it is a absolutely solid upgrade and I know I will be ordering one in black this Friday. Will you?
For those of you who aren't as Apple-geeky as me, here is a very brief rundown:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/
Apple is always behind Android by a significant amount of time. For that reason alone I will never buy an iPhone
Behind in what? Androids been ripping iOS off for years. If you mean hardware, i'd argue Apple doesn't use the pricier newer specs because their products runs perfectly fine on 1 generation older nodes and less ram.
A lot of people like me already invested a lot in itunes app store, and I'm too lazy to learn a new mobile system..
I will, but only because my 2 year contract just ended and I need a new phone.
Yep. It doesn't really blow my dick off as far as new stuff goes but for $199 it's not a bad deal for the 16.
