Yep. It sure didn't hurt me. I included it and got a BB SA position and invitations by all banks I sent my cv to.
I'm from Germany and our cv's get pre-screened by the German divisions and then sent to London. In Germany, a photo is always included, in London it's not. Anyway the recruiter encouraged me to include the pic. If you look like someone people want to go get a drink with, the photo in this particular situation is a +.

One kid at school put an ampersand '&' instead of dollar sign in front of his figures for the money he managed in student leadership. "&11,500" looks so good in a bullet point.
Another kid put "Increased in-store sales figures by 37% from $16,250 weekly to $14,000." I was like, I don't know what's worse, that you somehow managed to create a negative increase or that the percentage is wrong any way you look at it."

One of my headlines on my resume was "Hobbys" instead of "Hobbies". Incredibly embarrassing and it went out to the most prestigious bank. Still got invited.
I saw a girl put her name in size ~24 pink, non-standard font. I couldn't even identify what font it was; it looked like the "Curves" brand logo.
This girl also had no white-space. She had listed every extracurricular from high school on, even when she was just a member of a club and didn't actually do anything. Easily 15 different entities, each with their own line. Member of the anime club? Wow, that's bound to impress Goldman.
Not a resume mistake but as a Freshman I cold emailed an alum and not only called them by the wrong name, but wrote "Dear Mr. xxx". The alum I was trying to contact is female.. Needless to say, she did not respond, lol.

If there is a mistake regarding the dates you worked for each of companies you say you worked at on your resume (jan 2009-mar 2009 instead of jan 2008-mar2008) will this come up in a background check, and can they rescind your offer?
It will come up on a background check. It probably won't lead to a loss of offer. If you already have an offer, you can e-mail HR and let them know. They'll most likely laugh at you for making that mistake.
Note, however, this presupposes that you had jobs every year (i.e. you didn't end up covering up a missing year of work; for example, if you're most recent internship was jan 2008-mar 2008 and you didn't have any internship since then, then that could look a little bad because you now claimed to have had a job in jan 2009-mar 2009 when you really didn't.
GPA Mistake on resume (Originally Posted: 01/10/2011)
On my resume I listed my GPA as a 3.5 when on my transcript my GPA is a 3.4 flat. I had expected my GPA to be at least a 3.44 or 3.45 after this semester ended, but unfortunately my unofficial transcript did not come out until today.
I wouldn't have done something like this but some OCR apps were due a few days ago and I had to get them in.
If I am fortunate enough to end up with an offer, would a GPA discrepancy of 0.1 be grounds for dismissal?
And when banks do background checks, do they do it right after/before the offer, or do they do it right before you start work in June, where it would give you time to boost your GPA from the new semesters' grades--which would give me time to boost my GPA to what I put on my resume?

I'd think normally it wouldn't matter. If they ask, tell them you made a mistake and give them anything they ask for.
However, if the position you applied for required a 3.5 and it looks like you purposely faked it to bypass the requirement, you might be disqualified for that.

I just applied to a bunch of job postings and realized that i didn't have GPA scale on my resume :(
Unless you are international or from a school that deviates from the 4.0 scale, I wouldn't worry about that as an "error"...better to include it but I wouldn't bat an eye at someone who didn't.
Minor mistakes I have seen are usually grammatical (missing word) or formatting issues (dividing lines of the same length, dates aligned, consistent bolding, etc).
I don't understand why the same people who memorize excel shortcuts for an interview don't just learn how to use mail merge

Is this OCR? or on the website? I would find out who the HR person is overseeing your position, and email them to let them know you are updating your resume. DOnt say why, of course.
High chance they didn't catch it. Do what above posters have described. If they want to interview you, they will e-mail you if they can't get you on the phone.

The thing that scares me is if I tell him I look like a math major to stupid to calculate basic averages.
I don't even think you've made a mistake here. Economics is one of your majors, that gpa is your major gpa for economics. I would strongly suggest that you not say anything. No one is going to go through and calculate that. If they ever ask, just explain that it's your Econ gpa. And also don't feel bad, I know people who do this on purpose and I don't think it's wrong to do

I agree with MBAApply as well as the others - unless there are a fairly substantial number of glaring or consistent errors in your resume and essays, it's really about your story and how you sell yourself as an applicant rather than a few random spelling/grammatical/punctuation errors. Good luck!

You'll be fine. HR will only need your transcript after you graduate (AND get the job) and by that point it won't matter. They won't sit there and calculate your Math GPA.
Eh, I actually double majored in HR and Economics, and listed my Major GPA for HR because its higher than my Econ GPA. I really am not concerned HR will do a thing about it, and I haven't been questioned once yet on an interview.
Sorry clogging, but a friend of mine is stressing out, and I need some reassurance as proof that he should not be. Basically, he got a summer BB and is very excited. Yet, he noticed a couple days ago that his resume has a small mistake. Under the dates for a certain activity, or place he worked, he wrote the wrong date. For example, instead of working there, or participating in, 1998 it was 1999. Everything else, including time spent and what he did is the same. He contacted the company but has not heard back...an honest mistake, what do you think?
Shouldn't be a big deal. There is no ethical lapse and therefore probably no need for disciplinary action. Probably depends on the significance of the activity and the time-significance of the activity (example: doing a BBIBD internship sophomore year can look more impressive than during freshman year because a sophomore will most likely participate in the 'full' summer analyst program whereas a freshman MAY be be in a less rigorous program).
Interviewed at BB, realized mistake on resume (Originally Posted: 10/15/2011)
I just had my superday, and I realized that my resumes said "Deans List Each Semester" but in reality I actually didn't get dean's list for one of the semesters because I didn't have enough credits. The GPA is still valid and good but what should I do? Honest mistake!
Put it this way, you were not hired (or given an interview) because of that statement. Big things like GPA are checked, stupid shit like this isn't. You're fine.
I interviewed with a REIT 2 weeks ago over the phone, did okay and will be going to their office for a second round final interview soon.
However, I just realized the resume I sent them contains a small mistake.
I had a different internship before my summer internship and it ended in late May, but for some stupid reason, I listed it as still ongoing. There is really no excuse for it and I just fucked it up somehow.
I was asked about this during my phone interview (how you are able to work 2 internships, etc) and I didn't immediately connect with the interviewer and just told them I no longer worked there.
So Should I email the interviewer and point out this mistake? And should I bring copies of the corrected resume with me on final rd day?
I agree with the above, bring an updated version and if it comes up, mention that they probably have an older version.
If it doesn't come up at all and they're under the assumption you'll only be working their internship, then what your resume says doesn't really matter... They've interviewed you and confirmed in person that you're only going to work for them. In that scenario I'm not sure if it'd even be worth pointing out... Just go with the flow.
Now for my question: What kind of IB job are you doing for an REIT? Or is this just posted in the wrong section :-P
I doubt the people interviewing you will even look at resume until you physically arrive. Thats been my experience, anyways.
Just bring fresh copies, and also email HR saying "I've attached an updated resume that I'd like my interviewers to have for my upcoming interviews this week"
Small Resume Mistake (Originally Posted: 09/08/2010)
I have been networking recently and a few guys at BB's have sent in my resume to HR. I go to a top 15 school with a 3.65 GPA and two solid past internships but not IBD.
I know I should have been more careful, but I noticed I made a small tense mistake on my resume. I put "lead" instead of "led", for some reason in my head in the past I thought the past tense of "lead" was spelled the same, silly. Everything else is in the past tense.
How much will this doom me? There are no other mistakes and the resume otherwise looks good but I am nervous. Should I respond to my contacts with a new version of my resume?
I'm in PE, not IB, so I can't say I've ever reviewed a resume/app for a BB before, but my gut feeling is that you should not send another version of your resume. It may hurt you to some degree, but if it really is only just one mistake, and that one's not THAT bad, you will hopefully be okay. Sending in a new, different resume, is very abnormal and may seem weird. I've dealt with people sending in resume's at my PE firm and no one has ever done that.
If you are contacted by anyone at one of these firms who puts you in contact with anyone else etc, you can attach your new resume, without the mistake, to that email and just say you've provided it again "for your convenience".
My boss didn't even know the name of the company we acquired. Your resume falls so low on the importance scale that it is unlikely they'll ever know -- unless of course you call attention to it by sending out a new one.

Sent in resume that had a mistake on it (Originally Posted: 11/04/2015)
I sent in a resume to a bank that has given me a second round interview. This resume actually states that my GPA is a 3.5 when it is actually a 3.4.... I had a 3.5 on their because I filled it in including the current semester's grades... but now i realize they will see my grades before this semester is over. I go to a semi-target(Berkley, Haas), so that also makes my GPA more important than a target student and there is a large difference between a 3.4 and 3.5 so I am unsure what to do. Should I send my resume again with my real gpa? or should I ignore it? its just for a small boutique bank in southern california... so it's no GS screening this thing. A family friend referred me to this place so I also don't want to make him look like an idiot.
I sometimes update my resume with information that i have not yet achieved just to see how it will look lol... I also know i will have a 3.5 after this semester because of how the classes are going. that being said... I'm an idiot and sent in my resume that was revised with info I will not have completed until December 18th.
So, you got an interview at this place because of a family friend, and then you mislead them by essentially lying about your GPA? If you send in your "updated" resume, you'll get dinged (or at least you should). I would just withdraw my application before they find out and give your family friend a "WTF?!" type call.
theres not really an application process. its just a resume that I sent to the guy my family friend knew... but it was a mistake. I checked my resume and noticed I still had a 3.5 on there and knew i messed up... now i am unsure what to do...
0.1 difference shouldn't be big deal. Just say by the time you submitted your resume you thought 3.5 was expected...which is a common thing in online application

For one of my summer internships on my resume, I accidentally said "June 2013 - August 2014" instead of "June 2013 - August 2013" for the time I worked at the company. This resume got forwarded to recruiters at a major bulge bracket for my university. Will this kill me? I'm hoping it won't since this resume pass was just for networking and not directly yet applying for the job.
I've actually made some revisions to my education since the resume got forwarded. So I'm thinking about sending a new resume and saying "Here's an updated resume with some changes in my education" while also fixing the dates of the internship. What do you all think?
What were the other revisions you made? If they were substantive, then I'd go ahead and forward a new one. If it's just formatting and rewording, I'd let it lie
Inaccuracy on resume (Originally Posted: 05/18/2014)
I received an offer for a SA position in a MM, and when I was gathering the necessary information for the background check, I noticed that there is a "small" inaccuracy on the resume I sent them. It's about a(n) (irrelevant) student job I did a couple of years ago during the summer, and I put on the wrong date (2011 instead of 2010) on the resume. It's a very unfortunate typo, and clearly not a lie (there's nothing to lie about anyway, it was a trivial summer job). I sent them an e-mail immediately (not sure that was a good idea), and I am now freaking out. Am I overreacting?
Did they hire you because of that irrelevant job? I hope not. People stress out way too much about these kinds of things. You will be fine. If it comes up, explain the oops. They have already gone through all the trouble of interviewing you and hiring you... not going to make all that time a waste because you put the wrong year.
Resume Tips: 5 Things you should never write on your resume (Originally Posted: 06/07/2012)
Personal information: Information such as your gender, age and marital status is personal. In most places around the world (especially North America) employers should not ask for this information.
Picture: Even if you are as handsome as Brad Pitt or as charming as Charlize Therone, a word of advice is to avoid putting your picture on your resume.
Links to your social media accounts: If your SM accounts are not public, linking to them is not going to help you. If they are public, but you have some embarrassing pictures or tweets, the chances are that they are going to hurt you.
Interests: Employers are generally not interested to know about your hobbies such as playing soccer or salsa dancing, especially if those interests are not related to work.
References: You do not need to take up space in your resume to write phrases such as "References available upon request." Employers expect your reference list to be available whenever they ask!
Flat out wrong on the Interests point. I for one, as well as many others both on this forum and who I know personally, have had strong conversations spring up because of the Interests section. During one of my earliest superdays that ended up being the first offer I received, I had one interviewer who deadpanned me with a question about one of the more esoteric things I had listed and I decided to go for broke with my answer. Jumped into it headfirst with very evident enthusiasm and ended up spending more than 20 minutes talking with this guy about it who turned out to be an equal enthusiast.

I'm just curious, was this a more specific interest or something general? I feel like everyone lists football, traveling, but only pretty specific things can elicit this kind of response from an interviewer.
^ I agree. People who I've talked to have told me that interesting interests/activities (not related to finance) is important to show different sides of the student.
yea, as said above, i beleive you are wrong about not including interests. It is only 1 line and cannot hurt you. There are many times that it won't be brought up or looked at, but if you can connect with the interviewer about something other than finance than they are more inclined to like you as a person (making you a desirable person to spend time in the office with).

I vouch that one should place their gender on their CV for the following reason: we are hiring a new Ops person so thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and get a hardbody in as well. So when the hiring manager came to selecting people for interviews a "Nicky" was selected, turned out it was a dude, we were very disappointed.

At my last interview, we talked extensively about our interests and hobbies and I would definitely include them on your CV.
Furthermore, there are regions around the globe (f.e. Europe) where you do put a picture on your resume, so it isn't reasonable to say that you shouldn't include a picture. It just depends on the region you are applying to.

that kid should get hired without interviews
Back in high school some kid stated his interests as driving and sleeping and crossed out sleeping with a pencil.
As long as she has huge tits and a nice ass she's gold

Not a mistake, but one kid included is weight lifting stats. Ended up bringing him in and giving him an offer.

No, no one is going to make a big deal about it. You didn't intentionally lie, and if it comes up just be honest.
I would email OCR immediately and see if you can make changes; they are big on exact numbers so they should be accomodating.
Lol wow, you should put two digits even if it's like a 3.45.
Noticed gpa mistake on resume (Originally Posted: 02/13/2016)

I'd think normally it wouldn't matter. If they ask, tell them you made a mistake and give them anything they ask for.
However, if the position you applied for required a 3.5 and it looks like you purposely faked it to bypass the requirement, you might be disqualified for that.
No there was no 3.5 requirement, I think the minimum was a 3.2

what do you mean by gpa scale? do you mean you wrote '3.5' instead of '3.5/4.0' ?
better that way
yep...
I don't understand why the same people who memorize excel shortcuts for an interview don't just learn how to use mail merge score one for useful skills you pick up volunteering with nonprofits

Anything will help.
E-mail them and say you are submitting an updated resume.

Ring the bell
I bet it will show up in your Ding report (failure to pay attention to detail). I wouldnt worry about it. Good luck.
I know, it sounds silly. But you get paranoid after working on the app for so long.
I know kids that got into both schools (me being one of them) with spelling mistakes in their essays. So I wouldn't worry about it.
I know how it feels. Everyone tells you "baaah, it's a small thing" but when it's your own application on the line you just can't help being paranoid.
But yeeeah, it's a small thing. Chill.
It's not how perfect your application is, but how compelling you are as an applicant.
Don't worry about it. Yeah, an essay full of typos is bad, but I doubt a reader will notice something like that.
Alex Chu
I agree with MBAApply as well as the others - unless there are a fairly substantial number of glaring or consistent errors in your resume and essays, it's really about your story and how you sell yourself as an applicant rather than a few random spelling/grammatical/punctuation errors. Good luck!

Let me know if any of you had to contact HR to fix anything.
If your resume is otherwise competitive, this doesn't matter at all. Honestly you probably shouldn't have emailed.
I had a typo in my resume, similar kind of thing (I had overstated my GPA by 0.06 points) and no one cared. HR laughed at me when I brought it up.
.... dumb. should have never brought it up and played dumb if it ever came up. a 2260 vs 2290 is the same shit. pray they look kindly on your over-honesty.
They probably won't care at all.
lol are you serious? You emailed HR to fix something they literally never check about it being off by an inconsequential amount?
So Piper Jaffray-ish of you.
LOL
Hahaha. Yea everyone was right. HR didn't care at all and didn't even address the problem really, lol.

You'll be fine. HR will only need your transcript after you graduate (AND get the job) and by that point it won't matter. They won't sit there and calculate your Math GPA.
you sure they don't calculate major GPA

Careless error, I doubt anyone would really care that much. Seriously, would you fire someone for putting down the wrong date for an internship?
Shouldn't be a big deal. There is no ethical lapse and therefore probably no need for disciplinary action. Probably depends on the significance of the activity and the time-significance of the activity (example: doing a BB IBD internship sophomore year can look more impressive than during freshman year because a sophomore will most likely participate in the 'full' summer analyst program whereas a freshman MAY be be in a less rigorous program).
yea it was in high school I believe.
why dont you just say it was you?

you're screwed
You just realized? Honest mistake? You are full of shit, BUT they won't care about it so lucky for you.
Put it this way, you were not hired (or given an interview) because of that statement. Big things like GPA are checked, stupid shit like this isn't. You're fine.
no one will care
obviously be honest, but knowing HR's attention to detail, you could probably BS every extracurricular and no one would know
ahh thanks guys for the help. I am thinking about calling them, but thats probably dumb.
The bigger mistake is that you wrote it "Deans List" and not "Dean's List."
For that, you are screwed. Punctuation man. Cmon, it's all you're gonna be doing as a 1st year analyst anyway.
Also, Why Would You Write It Like This On Your Resume? This Doesn't Look Normal Does It?
The apostrophe is pretty shitty, but they didn't notice apparently because I got an interview. Unless they notice it now. Don't tell them!
If you've already got an interview, I wouldn't worry too much about it
Seriously dude, don't worry about it. No one cares. Most people read that and think "every kid with this cumulative gpa has this"
Do BBs even conduct background checks for sophomore summer internships?
I don't think they would check something like that. So long as you didn't lie about the GPA, you're fine - that's what they'll check.
Resume Mistake (Originally Posted: 07/22/2011)
And should I bring copies of the corrected resume with me on final rd day?
just let him know that you sent an old version, send the new version, and bring with on the day of. no big deal.
Anyone got a second opinion?
Thanks for the response
Just bring fresh copies, and also email HR saying "I've attached an updated resume that I'd like my interviewers to have for my upcoming interviews this week"
or something to that effect.
Also, is this seriously a question?
self doubts guys, self doubts...
thanks for the responses

I know I should have been more careful, but I noticed I made a small tense mistake on my resume. I put "lead" instead of "led", for some reason in my head in the past I thought the past tense of "lead" was spelled the same, silly. Everything else is in the past tense.
How much will this doom me? There are no other mistakes and the resume otherwise looks good but I am nervous. Should I respond to my contacts with a new version of my resume?
Thank you!
No.. don't worry about it and don't bring it up. Stop stressing about stupid shit.
I've seen some terrible CV mistakes and this doesn't even scratch the surface. 99.5% of people will never catch that mistake. Relax dude.
A lot of people probably think that's the right way to spell it anyway
At least you're not straight up lying
As long as you didn't forget to put EXTENSION SCHOOL, you should be good to go.
My boss didn't even know the name of the company we acquired. Your resume falls so low on the importance scale that it is unlikely they'll ever know -- unless of course you call attention to it by sending out a new one.

Wait so you added in your grades from the current semester before it is actually over? Lol what the hell compelled you to do that?
With that said, I would just leave it and hope they don't complete their due diligence/ask for your transcript before the end of the semester
A mistake is a type-O or a grammar error. This is just blatant misrepresentation...
...
What is your gpa? I had a 3.46 which I put as a 3.5.
0.1 difference shouldn't be big deal. Just say by the time you submitted your resume you thought 3.5 was expected...which is a common thing in online application

^ I agree. People who I've talked to have told me that interesting interests/activities (not related to finance) is important to show different sides of the student.
the interests thing seems to be finance specific.
dumb
I really wish I could have went to rutgers and been your roommate. Would Have saved WSO a lot of time.
yea, as said above, i beleive you are wrong about not including interests. It is only 1 line and cannot hurt you. There are many times that it won't be brought up or looked at, but if you can connect with the interviewer about something other than finance than they are more inclined to like you as a person (making you a desirable person to spend time in the office with).

How about learn the specifics of this industry before making generalizations based on some random youtube clip.
I guess you are right, will do. Thanks!
I vouch that one should place their gender on their CV for the following reason: we are hiring a new Ops person so thought we'd kill two birds with one stone and get a hardbody in as well. So when the hiring manager came to selecting people for interviews a "Nicky" was selected, turned out it was a dude, we were very disappointed.
stop 3 stripper names:
Also, I agree with everything about keeping the Interests section. Have had more than one interview where it's been a conversation piece.
