Legendary IB thread, comment have several different perspectives: https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-…
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/private-equ… (Thread by an ex-APO ASO. Even though it doesn’t paint APO in a negative light, the way this guy thinks is telling of the types of ppl that crush it in this field)
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/job-search/…
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-… (Reinforces my view that only those who are wired like this make it in the field)
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/private-equ…
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/private-equ…
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/private-equ… (Doesn't explicitly say anything bad about APO but the answers shed light on the type of person that succeeds here. Particularly there is this comment about personality fit: those who work hard, prioritize work first, high horsepower, sharp elbowed, risk averse. Also sheds light on pay. You don't fully receive your carry until ~10 years, and you never actually get the "headline carry". Only ~50% will actually end up being paid out, and almost 100% of that payout needs to be committed to the next fund. The deferral is brutal. The golden handcuffs only get tighter as you become more senior. "I have peers that have been in the industry 10-15 years post-MBA that have not realized any carry.")
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/investment-… (Document following death of BofA associate demands that hours be capped at 100hr/week and that nobody should be required to stay in the office past 1am more than twice a week)
https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/private-equ… (A great balanced take that touches upon both benefits and consequences of going into PE)

So what career within finance doesn't suck?
The ones that college prospects shit on the most: Sales, IR, Private Banking, RIA, Secondaries/FoF, Allocation, ECM/DCM, Business Development, Corporate Finance, etc
Does secondaries necessarily have a reduced comp potential compared to traditional PE?
Who gives a shit dude don't you have a job or something
Why are you whining bro he's giving a useful perspective.
I'll never understand why some people live to complain
Amen.
Yes, it's tough, you know what you're signing up for.
It's a privileged position and it's not the life for everybody.
If you're whinging because you're chronically unhappy with the job and/or are sick of the grind. leave, and find happiness.
the links don't work mate

Should be fixed now. Seems that after I edited the post on mobile, a lot of the links got destroyed. WSO dev team needs to look into this
You must be a credit guy
