Hurricane Sandy - Going to work? (Please Post Updates in Here)

Fellow Monkeys,

How many of you are expected to make it into work today or tomorrow with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on us? Our offices are still open and around half of the analysts are going in.

Mod note (Andy) See current updates about returning to work here: "How many of you in NYC are back at work?"

I'm here. These East Coasters have no idea what bad weather is... this is hardly a drizzle.

The last few down here on the Texas Gulf Coast we've had hurricane parties.

Been at work since 8 in Midtown. Its like a small drizzle... leaving around noon though.

I think many firms in Midtown are operating normally. Those in the downtown area are shut down for the day, including GS, DB, ML etc as these firms are located within evacuation zone A. MS is closing its downtown offices while keeping the headquarters and other offices in Midtown open which is a fairly typical arrangement.

Still, even for those firms that stay open today, many of their employees will not be able to make it to the offices as the Metro North, LIRR and NJ Transits are all shut down.

Love it. You can bet that I will short them when markets reopen. Almost like a great tip to the trader

Working from home..... It is quite drizzle in midtown, but at least they are hyping it more than Hurricane Irene which barely effected my zone B. Now I got a good view of Zone A, B, C.

I've been going back and forth between whether postponing earnings would be a sign of good or bad things to come. Part of me says if they were awful I'd announce now when people aren't paying attention, but the other part says obviously you'd hold off as long as possible on shitty earnings. Pfeizer postponing and Burger King announcing has me thinking that you'd postpone the good news until everyone's back in the market, so that's actually the way I'm leaning. But we're ignoring that debate and focusing more on how neurotic we think management is at each of the companies with betting action. And all fingers crossed on Ford to kill it tomorrow.

Yes, that's where I live. My building didn't order any specific evac other than reiterating what bloomberg said about leaving zone a. The only stipulation was that at noon today they shut down the elevators and locked the doors to lay down sand bags, so they warned us we needed to make a move if we wanted in or out.

They said power would be shut off if water got into the basement, but so far so good. My apt looks out to the east, so I don't know what the rest of BPC behind me is like right now, but from my window I can't see any other buildings besides mine that have power. The battery park tunnel is filled to the very top with water, crazy stuff.

Well guys. According to weather.com, Sandy will make landfall soon and DESTRUCTION IS IMMINENT. We survived Irene last year, we can sure as hell survive this. Hope everyone is safe out there.

Last year I stayed at a hotel to get into work on time on Monday.

This year, it is happening on my one week "fall break". #FML

Ouch...was it your choice to stay at a hotel or firm mandated?

My building in Jersey City was in the flood zone and I did not trust PATH. And I did not want to lose electricity.

It was partly out of an abundance of caution having never dealt with a hurricane before; it was partly out of a "Hey! I want to join the 'got to work at 8AM after the hurricane' club".

Do you guys think that it would be insensitive to try to follow up with a decent contact tomorrow morning? I'm trying to reach someone at DB ahead of their campus presentation this Thursday. Before you contact him or her check to see if there office is closed. If it is closed then contact away! I'm guessing his or her office opens Wednesday, so it'll most likely be a hectic day and it could mean the campus presentation will be pushed back due to that and road/airport conditions.

Thoughts on plants Audi Brussels and Volvo Gent?

I am guessing that they will share the same fate as Ford Genk in the LT (maybe even ST, who knows). This disindustrializing of developed economies will surely continue, and Belgium as one of the countries with one of the highest "social" burdens (as an employer you pay 3000 for a worker to earn 1500) will definitely receive additional blows. The closure in Genk also clearly illustrates that even the government is not able to convince companies to keep their production units in the country, you can hardly blame them though, over the past months our government has really done some amazing effort to scare away companies.

It's actually quite ironic that we need more than a year to form such an incompetent government.

Also interesting to watch is that all old Saab dealers have transformed into Subaru dealers, do you think that there are new Saab-like casualties waiting to happen?

Yeah, it still remains a really interesting sector.

Rental insurance would not have helped me as the insurance company would simply argue that my building was flooded therefore I should have bought flood insurance. In any case, I bet the premia on both rental and flood insurances in the city will skyrocket after this episode. It will be just like in FL.

Are you back to your building yet? For my building it could be 4+ months before it is habitable again. This is ridiculous. With 4 months they could re-wire the whole empire state building! Cooper Square Realty has got to be the worst building management in NYC. My building is condominium so presumably Cooper Square is still counting on collecting common charges from the unit owners while they sit around and procrastinating. They unit owners should all stop paying the common charges until they get the building back in order. That would give them incentives to hurry up and get the jobs done.

everyone's back to work now right?

Nope, my BB's tower above like the first 10 floors still has no electricity. Probably won't be working all week. Live in West Village too and all power is still out and not expected until Saturday to come back. Thank god for gas stoves though.

At least my FB short was profitable today.

It's always fascinating watching the effects on us human beings when we no longer have our machines that keep us going. Most of us will tough it out as you did, but others will turn to cruel looting, robbery, and other acts of desperation.

But one of the great things about this nation is how quickly we can all pull together as neighbors. On my block, the guys all formed a crew with chainsaws and tools and were able to clear up someone's yard of downed trees and debris in 15 minutes--then they did the rest of the block.

Beautiful thing.

Pretty over dramatic. We lost power for ALMOST a week, it wasn't that bad to walk up past 39th or w/e, eat at a restaurant and charge your phone. Stayed above freezing. NoPo...really?

Right, almost a week and people start getting mugged and people start looting. Places that are still out of power with gas lines that take hours are feeling it much worse.

Did you lose power? If so, did you stay in your apartment or book it to a friend's north of 40th?

Same here, no power all week. I took like eight or nine dumps in central park.

that sounds pretty convenient. good use of the park.

I find it funny how fast uncivilized some people go when there's no electricity in civilized places. As a kid I grew up in a village in Mexico where there where few places with electricity, but never had to worry about crime at night. Also from volunteering in 3rd world countries, I noticed that for the first week with out power a lot of people freak out but once they come to terms with the situation they adapt and it's no longer a problem.

Personal wealth is not how much you have in the bank or the worth of your portfolio. But, rather how you've used the wealth to make your life and those around you better.

I fully anticipate service being shut down. I agree that the storm's strength is being overblown and overdramatized, but from the (moderate) research I have done into it, it seems this will certainly be worse than Irene.

I stocked the fridge up and got a few nonperishables, but I live a couple hundred feet from a 24-hour Duane Reade so getting my hands on anything critical wouldn't be hard at all even in very severe weather. The most I did in terms of preparation was set my Xbox back up and reactive Netflix.

Thanks for you insights. Personally since I am naturally suspicious of governments in general (Ron Paul 2016!) I take everything coming out of the governor or mayor's office with a grain of salt. I just checked the weather channel storm trajectory again. At this point they tend to be fairly reliably and once again it shows that the storm will pass through PA into NJ and onto upstate from there. Rochester is now identified as potential hazard area but no, NYC is still safe.

Me thinks the Dutch picked Manhattan island in part because, being the good natural born engineers they are, they just knew that Manhattan was shielded geographically by Jersey on the west and LI on the east so that any storm/hurricane is extremely unlikely to afflict much damage in or near the city.

Last year Irene touched down in LI/western Brooklyn and went on to wreck havoc in New England where it annihilated a good chunk of VT (tropical storm in New England imagine that ) but it completely spared the Island of Manhattan. This year Sandy is coming from West and will probably do a tons of damages throughout the DC metro area, NJ and upstate but again it will spare NYC.

Sandy will be just another rain storm perhaps with some thundersnow this time but I dont expect any major flooding or buildings going down or windows beings blown open (except the really derelict ones which would collapese under any storm anyway).

I will check back here if/when I survive the storm to see if I am vindicated in my analysis. Good luck everyone and Happy Halloween!

Looks way over dramatized - as usually. 75 mph sustained winds? Just looking at buoy readings at NOAA website on the path of hurricane doesn't show any gusts stronger than 50mph.... Certainly can be pushing high waters, but no signs of any monster coming whatsoever....

I received the mandatory evacuation order for my Battery Park City building by 7 PM today. Talked to the doorman who told me that, unlike last year, they are shutting down all water, electricity and elevators this time around so that literally everyone would have to leave (last year during Irene about a dozen of us stayed).

This is sheer stupidity. I had to book a hotel room in Brooklyn at last minute (furthest points from the water in NYC) for the next 3 days. When this non-event is over I will send my hotel bill to the mayor and governor's offices. Also had to reschedule meetings for next week.

Thanks for the update. Limited Subway is coming back today but of course Manhattan below 38th street will not see service restored. Bloomberg is encouraging everybody to take bus...yeah right if you dont mind waiting 2 hours in a bus stop in freezing weather only to see one after another of crowded buses pass you by and then spend another 2 hours on the bus to travel 10 blocks.

Cars need to have at least 3 passengers to be allowed to cross the bridges into Manhattan to help alleviate congestion.

I wish that WSO could have a dedicated section for people to post Sandy related updates, seeing as how this affects so many members and other readers of this site.

Nolita resident .. still no power. Showered at a friend's place today, dying to get into a gym. No subway service in lower Manhattan for at least another week, even where they've pumped the water out they're going to need to go through and inspect all the electrical components for damage and repair. Thinking of going to my parents' house somehow and bringing a car back for two weeks or so. Not forking $15 over to a cabbie every time I need to get somewhere.

Yeah, alcohol wasn't even a question.

The real issue is, how do I keep at least one person from drinking so that there can be some sort of alertness in the house.

I still went to the halloween party at a lounge last night. It turned out to be a colossal disappointment. I wonder what will happen to my next one on 31st. Nobody cares about halloween now. But I paid for it so will go if I can.
